Romney Collins Presents
 |
In photo: Romney Shelton Collins
Romney Shelton Collins, a native of Burke, Virginia where she exhibits and teaches on a regular basis, presented a program, “Reflections on Silver”, to The Palm City Art Associates at their February 2010 meeting in the Fellowship Hall of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Palm City.
Her interest in art was spurred by drawing classes at the College of Southern Maryland. Later on, she studied oils with international artists Robert and June Anderson and then followed it up by working with Daniel Greene. These artists have a strong basis of traditional art based on the old masters, resulting in Romney’s classical approach to painting.
Working on gessoed masonite with 3-4 coats of gesso, she tones her board with a base color upon which she lays in her mid-tones first, then darks and lastly lights. She uses Liquin as her medium and uses filbert brushes to apply her favorite colors: thalo blue, burnt umber, alizarin crimson, yellow ochre and cadmium yellow. Romney stresses "paint what you see."
Her work is shown in many galleries in Florida, Virginia and West Virginia.
The University of Charleston named Romney as one of West Virginia’s top one hundred women painters. Her work is on permanent display at the university. Romney lives with her husband in a restored historic home in GreenbrierCounty, where she exhibits and teaches art on a regular basis. During the winter months, she resides and teaches in Martin County, Florida where she teaches oil painting classes with a classical approach. Her classes usually run from January – March. For more information contact Romney at elmerfcollins@bellsouth.net.

Mimi McCallum and C.J. Lucien Appearing At Harbor Bay Gallery Through February 23
 |
In photo: Local artist Mimi Mccallum and Visiting from Taos, New Mexico artist C. J. Lucien
Sewell’s Point -- Well-known local artist Mimi McCallum is experiencing quite a busy season, Mimi unveiled her poster for the Hobe Sound Art Show two weeks ago. She was been featured artist at Palm City Art Associates in late January. She is always available for First Thursday Art Tour at The Fish House Gallery in Port Salerno and now a companion showing at harbor Bay plaza.
Surrounded by several of her magnificent paintings, Mimi explained that although she is known for her figurative art, her uniqueness is her color palette. She says the use of strong primary colors set up an up-beat mood -- colors so vibrant they jump off the canvas. Composition and perspective come together forming statements about subjects. And her paintings certainly display these characteristics. Her style is realistic with painterly overtones in her favorite medium, oil. Her subjects range from figures at the beach to Flora and landscapes.
A retired art teacher, Mimi now has a working studio at the Fish House Art Center in Port Salerno where her paintings can be seen. They can also be seen at www.mimimccallum.com.
Joining Mimi in this special showing is CJ Lucien, a highly talented artist and designer who recently moved here from Taos, New Mexico. C.J. who is also an interior designer has been showing since the Fall here at The Elliot Museum juried art show, West Palm Beach and can also be seen at Rare Earth Gallery.

Artist, author and writer Marian Christy visited Stuart
 |
Stuart -- Friday night which is usually a somewhat quiet night in Downtown Stuart was not the case on January 15th, 2010. Downtown Stuart seemed a little more a glow like being in New York City's Soho. Street carolers promoting stage productions went through town as beautiful music rocked S.E. Ocean blvd. created by live bands. Vendors along with some of the best musicians I have heard in long while in our somewhat "quiet" but precious little town were doing what they do best. Stuart buzzed and even hummed. Stuart's Cultural Art Center was busy honoring a veteran artist of our city, Howard Schaeffer.
Meanwhile just off of confusion corner Marian Christy's works were on display at the Grand Opening of Osceola32. A few hundred people were sipping champagne and eating appetizers as they took in the magic of the "Christy" everyone longs to own. Viewers could not believe that one woman could create such a wide array of mystical and unique french impressionistic watercolors. This was a powerful moment for Bostonian Marian Christy who humbly stood before her art.
The illustrious celebrity, Boston Globe columnist, acclaimed award winning writer made her first trip to Florida since her accident which damaged her one arm and remarkably she journeyed to Stuart to exhibit her art for the first time is in a commercial gallery. Everyone had an opportunity to speak with Christy as she explained her ground breaking technique in watercolor with use of the palette knife. The Roddy winning painter, who is outwardly beautiful as well as is inwardly, at age 78 gracefully answered questions and recited her stories which accompanied each painting throughout the night. It was both a tender and poignant moment to see the artist amongst so many attentive viewers who sincerely welcomed her to Stuart. Her prolific amount of works were impeccably assembled and displayed assisted by Pat Hendershot art consultant to the gallery. Robert Steinberg played piano throughout the entire night providing an ambiance of celebration and respect for such an amazing moment in Stuart's history. The comments from all attending shared the central theme of appreciation for the opportunity to witness such a brilliant show: "One woman many perspectives III." The "Why not Stuart show" had paved the way for the absolutely metamorphosis of Stuart's being called "Little Soho's sister."
"Keep on keeping on" Osceola32 and a hearty welcome indeed.

 |

The Barn Theatre Presents, Rumors!
 |
By: Jeannie Ferarra
STUART, FL.—Martin County’s oldest stage, the Barn Theatre, is proud to present, “Rumors,” a farce by Neil Simon, directed by Jan Buzzeo. The show opens on January 22nd, and runs through February, 7th, 2010 (with a special preview performance for the Pink Tie Friends on January 21st). Tickets are $20pp for reserved seats, with tickets for students available for $10pp every Wednesday. Student and groups rates are available.
Just in time to relieve post-Holiday stress, Buzzeo and company set the stage for Rumors in the large, tastefully appointed Sneden's Landing townhouse. The show begins with the Deputy Mayor of New York has just shot himself. Though only a flesh wound, four couples are about to experience a severe attack of Farce. As the confusions and mis-commnications mount, the evening spins off into classic farcical hilarity. * Please be advised that this show contains Adult Language and may not be suitable for younger audiences.
The Barn Theatre has regularly entertained local non-profit and charity groups prior to opening night. The Producers, directors, and thespians generously provide a “sneak-peek” and lovely intermission reception, which is probably one of the best-kept secrets in Stuart.
Do not miss your chance to be a part of this side-splitting evening! Stop by the Barn Theater at: 2400 SE Ocean Blvd. , Stuart , Florida , or visit: www. http://www.barn-theatre.com/, or call: 772-287-4884, see you at the show!

Gallery Nominated for National Award
 |
Port St. Lucie -- For seven years, remarkable female artists of St. Lucie County have gathered to put on a unique show, great party and make a difference in the lives of area children. This year, the gallery that created and hosts this remarkable show has been nominated for a national award because of its humanitarian efforts in the community. Lafferandre Gallery has been nominated by NICHE magazine for a “Best In-Store Event” award. Only 19 galleries throughout the country were nominated for this prestigious award, and the winner will be announced on August 8th at a black-tie dinner in Philadelphia for industry professionals.
The nomination for the unique marketing effort by Lafferandre Gallery known as The Women of St. Lucie County, celebrates the effort which combined an opportunity for amateur and professional artists of St. Lucie County to show and sell their work at the Lafferandre Gallery in Historic Downtown Fort Pierce. A portion of the proceeds from each sale during the popular show were donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters, a non-profit organization which helps provide mentoring for children in our community. The show, always well-attended by the community, is always exciting and features a broad mix of two and three-dimensional art.
While the award nomination may have come as a surprise to gallery owners “Laff” and Leslie Lafferandre, the Lafferandre Gallery is no stranger to giving back to the community of Fort Pierce. Leslie Lafferandre was quick to give credit to Southern Eagle Distributing for sponsoring the annual event, and to the marvelous work of Big Brothers Big Sisters in providing a positive impact on the children of the community and its future. The Lafferandre Gallery is located at 205 North Second Street in historic downtown Fort Pierce (772) 489-4255. For additional information on Big Brothers Big Sisters, please call (772) 466-8535.
