Tom Winter Photograph Win 1st place, and Best In Show
 |
In photo: “sunrise sculler”,
Orlando -- This week was a great one for 6 of my favorite images at the 2010 Florida Professional Photographers (FPP) Competition in Orlando, FL. Every year pro shooters from around the state gather for this distinguished event and convention. The competition is fierce, and the images are all top notch, so it’s a real honor to rank in the top ten.
The prints in the competition are judged on 12 primary elements, some of which are: Impact, Creativity, Technical Excellence, Composition, Lighting, Style, Print Presentation, Subject Matter, and Story Telling.
There are a number of categories, and awards are available for 1st -3rd place, and best in show. Overall scores contribute to a ranking that this year placed me in the FPP top ten which was the most exciting award of the week.
The big winner was the “sunrise sculler”, that earned a score of 95, 1st place, and Best In Show. This was the second year in a row I took 1st place in the landscape category and that 95 is an extremely difficult score to achieve.

Gyotaku the art of fish painting by Ken Dara
 |
Japanese legend tells a story of a fisherman was bringing home his days catch when one fish fell in the mud. He picked the fish up, wrapped it in some paper and continued on his journey home.
When arriving home he unwrapped the fish and on the paper was an imprint of the fish and thus Gyotaku, the Japanese art of fish printing was born.
A visit to Hobe Sound artist Ken Dara will show how he is keeping the art alive.

CHARMAINE TRUITT'S QUILT ART
 |
In photo: Charmaine presents one of her quilt blocks at PCAA meeting
By Ruthann Hewson
Palm City -- Noted local quilter and artist, Charmaine Truitt, gave a presentation on May 17, 2010 for members of the Palm City Art Associates. She chronicled her journey from artist and traditional quilter to art-quilter. As the daughter of an artist, she was exposed to art at an early age, but didn’t take up art as a hobby until 20 years ago. Beginning in the decorative painting style, she went from there to taking drawing and oil painting lessons. Always fascinated with fabrics, in 2000 she began traditional quilting. In 2006, answering a call by the Palm Beach Post and the Norton Museum of Art for quilters of the Treasure Coast to submit a 12 ½ inch by 12 ½ inch quilt block depicting a South Florida scene,
Charmaine submitted her “Flamingo Sunset” quilt block. Thirty blocks were chosen out of 160, one of which was hers. The quilt blocks were made into a quilt that would hang in the lobby of the NortonMuseum for the summer and fall and would later be auctioned for charity. Thus began Charmaine’s art-quilt career.
For her presentation, Charmaine brought in many of her projects. They included traditional, contemporary and art quilts, thread painting, and one collaborative piece done with five other art quilters.
Palm City Art Associates, Inc. is a non-profit organization of artists and art lovers dedicated to encouraging and promoting the creative arts among its members and in our community. They meet the 3rd Monday of each month from September through May. If you would like more information or would like to join, please contact President Nancy Steinberg at 344-5104 or njdct@aol.com.

FROM CLAY TO POTTERY WITH CARLEE WESTON
 |
By: Ruthann Hewson
Local potter and studio owner, Carlee Weston, demonstrated the art of HandBuilding a cylinder from clay to the Palm City Art Associates, Inc. (PCAA) during their April 19th meeting at ImmanuelLutheranChurch’s fellowship hall on Martin Downs Blvd. in PalmCity.
Taking a large chunk of damp clay, Carlee first kneaded it as one would knead bread dough. Then, as with pie crust, she rolled it into a smooth, circular slab with a traditional rolling pin. The slab was then wrapped around a PVC pipe which had been covered with newspaper to prevent sticking. After some drying of the clay, the PVC & paper were removed, leaving her with a malleable cylindrical piece. Next, while dampening with a wet sponge, Carlee formed the shape of a vase with her hands, fingers and a “throwing stick”. When the desired shape is formed, the piece needs to dry for 1-2 weeks depending upon the type of clay used. Then it is fired for 24 hours, glazed and undergoes a second firing. So that PCAA members could see the final product, Carlee displayed several beautiful pieces of pottery that she had already completed.
Carlee’s work has been seen in books and national publications, such as American Collectibles, Metropolitan magazine and Designers’ Resources. She has exhibited in national juried exhibitions and craft fairs including the prestigious American Craft Council’s.
Carlee has worked in clay, taught clay, managed studios and is now the owner of a lively group studio, where the tradition of teaching and sharing continues and is reflected in the work shown in the gallery – her work as well as that of her studio students and members. Her gallery, The Pottery of Carlee Weston & Friends, LLC is located at 344 NW Alice Ave., Stuart, FL, 772-692-3586, www.carleeweston.com where she offers classes that teach basic pottery skills.

They are: Craig Krefetz, Stephanie Forsberg, Jill Lavetsky, Shannon Mahler, Lisa Piccitto, Amanda Rosenblatt, and Shawna Scarpitti. As curator Andrea Maison noted, “The New provides a glimpse into some of the Treasure Coast’s most creative young minds. In keeping with larger trends in art today, the exhibition presents a wide range of styles and techniques –some that may be familiar and others that are completely new.”
This year, the exhibition features work with a variety of media including paint, photography, collage, black lights and live plants. Artwork may be purchased, with a portion of the proceeds to benefit programs of the Council.
“THE NEW” exhibition will continue at the Court House Cultural Center through May 7, 2010. The exhibition is sponsored by Women Supporting the Arts and the Palm Beach Post.
