Meet Alan West Candidate for Congress District 16 February 24th
Dear Chamber Member,
As you are aware our U.S. Representative Tom Rooney will be leaving Congressional District 16 (due to redistricting) to run for election in newly formed District 17. Representative Rooney made the commitment to address our Council of Chambers prior to making that decision. After the redistricting issue decision he offered to step aside in as much as he wouldn't be representing our district any longer, which we immediately put to rest. Congressman Rooney suggested he invite Congressman Alan West, a candidate for our newly designed District 18, to attend the lunch. Congressman West agreed and is confirmed to also be at the lunch.

DiTerlizzi To Run For District 5 School Board Seat
In photo: Mike Diterlizzi at Palm City Chamber event
Palm City – Although somewhat premature Mike DiTerlizzi made an informal announcement at the Palm City Chamber new member breakfast this morning.
The seat which is currently occupied by outgoing Dr. David Andersn, also has two other candidates so far, Jackie Jackson from the Martin County Early Learning Coalition, who has run twice before and Drew Weil.
I have a passion for public service and since my county commission days, which ended in 2008, I have missed contributing to my community. The school board needs a budget guy and that’s one of the things I can bring to the table.
The establishment of a bank account for the campaign will probably be done today and the official paperwork for the August 14 election will be done by the filing deadline in June.

Reconfigured Lots Increase Downtown Public Parking by 24 Spaces
STUART, FL – January 19, 2012 – The City of Stuart this week announced it has converted 24 spaces in three downtown parking lots to public parking. The spaces, in the parking lots in front of City Hall at 121 SW Flagler Avenue and adjacent to the City Hall Annex at 300 St. Lucie Boulevard, were previously designated for employees of the city Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Effective this week all employee parking has been relocated to the lot in front of the former Dockside Restaurant, making all 76 spaces in the three city hall lots available to the public. Relocating employee parking is one way we can support our businesses by making it easier for customers to patronize these downtown locations.”
New signage has been installed at all three locations designating the lots as public parking. The lots will be subject to the same three hour parking guidelines that are in place throughout the downtown area. The Sailfish Shuttle will continue to provide service to downtown from all parking lots in the area including the city hall lots and the Kiwanis Park and Sailfish satellite lots.
The City of Stuart is a coastal community of approximately 16,000 on the East Coast of Florida. The local economy focuses on trade and services with a stable population base that includes approximately 30-percent retirees. Like most artists, Maria’s work is constantly evolving which is evident in the variety of subject matter and painting styles throughout the years. What stays consistent is the passion for color and bold, minimal composition. This is most obvious in her photographic imagery. Photography has always been a vehicle for inspiration and experimentation and is the usual resource for Maria’s paintings. Being able to capture a place, or moment in time and transfer that to a canvas is what Maria’ is called to do artistically. Sometimes however, her images stop at the photographic process. Her students are also a huge part of her artistic journey and are a huge inspiration and keep her motivated to try new methods. Subjects and ideas come from the people around her; her family, her loves, her students, her friends and all the wonderful twists and turns of their lives that they share.

Sailsurprise In Paradise
By: Dick Hall
Port Salerno – You may ask; why do people move to or visit The Treasure Coast and Martin County during the Christmas and New Year Season. The ability to spend a quiet Sunday afternoon with Captain Corky and his first mate Sue is one reason.
Last weekend members of the local business community accepted an invitation from Captain Corky to join he and his first mate for a demonstration cruise. It certainly was well worth it.
Join Roger, Mona, Andrew, Dan Rochelle myself and my wife Robin and others for an afternoon of relaxation.
Their catamaran sailing trips offer relaxed and fun camaraderie, comfortable accommodations, fabulous meals, beautiful scenery, storied locations and the adventure of fast, exciting sailing. Surprise carries three large sails including a large asymetric spinnaker. We have sailed her at 18.6 knots.
Surprise has a new home port on Florida's east coast. Located at Stuart on the St. Lucie River, our dock is in Manatee Pocket at the Port Salerno Fish House Art Center.
They now offer half and full days on Florida's East Coast at Stuart and they add these cruises to weekends and weeks to points south and east, south from Stuart to Miami, to the Keys and to the Tortugas. East to the Bahamas to the Turks & Caicos and on to the Caribbean is also on the available itineraries.
They come from up north where they have done extensive East Coast sailing and growing up on the waters of New England and know the cruising grounds from Georgia to the Canadian Maritimes. Offerings in summer can include points north to storied locations such as New Bedford, Nantucket, Provincetown and Bar Harbor.

S. P. A. M. Is Back
In photo: 2011/2012 S. P. A. M.team
Port Salerno – Any S.P.A.M student will tell you that one of the most fun times in their life was at a robotics competition. Over the year, students constantly gain more pride for the team, and this comes bursting out when competitions arrive. Students dress in Superman capes, trade buttons with thousands of other kids in attendance, and scream at the top of their lungs whenever their robot is in action. Whether they win or not, S.P.A.M is an amazing experience at competitions, which is the least they could ask for after months of hard work. The team pride continues in the off-season months, as students show off their team shirts and buttons around school, and meet up for volunteer events in their community.
The team held an open house at The Morgade Library last evening to muster support from a local community that has not heard much from the much heraled team in recent years. With 40 new freshman on this years team it appears that they are in good shape to rebuild for a shot at many more victorious competitions over the next 4 years.
S. P. A. M. is composed of students from Jensen Beach, Martin County, South Fork High Schools, and Clark Advance Learning Center. On the football fields they may be rivals, but when they walk through the doors of the “S. P. A. M. Pit”, they are one united team. Students learn collaboration from day one, and continue this ideal when they are paired with random alliance partners on the field. This teamwork has paid off, as S. P. A. M. has been a national runner-up, won 2 Regional Championships, and won numerous other accolades during our 13 year history.
Regional competitions inclued Orlando as well as the addition of Miami to the schedule. Come out and support our Martin County team.

Meet Brenda Leigh AGAIN at Cummings Library

Palm City -- In the Spring I introduced you to Benda Leigh as she painted the mural at the downtown Convention and Visitors bureau building.
Brenda can be seen now and then, here and there all over the county, on a scaffold or a ladder putting her creative energies to work for all to enjoy.
Today she is working on a mural at the Cumming Library in Palm City where she is doing a Martin County wet lands theme in the children’s section of the library.
