    Project Trio September 18th

    10 June trio.jpg

    At The Lyric Theater, Stuart

This is definitely not your grandparents’ classical music. Or is it? Prepare to experience the classics in a whole new way when Project Trio takes the stage.

Project Trio’s musicians, Greg Pattillo (flute), Eric Stephenson (cello) and Peter Seymour (bass) honed their craft as students at the Cleveland Institute of Music, and have a collective professional resume that includes stints with the Houston Symphony and the Cleveland Orchestra. But together they create a decidedly different take on the classics – one Seymour describes as “high octane chamber music.”

“We have a sound completely unique to ourselves,” says Seymour. “This comes not only from the instrumentation of flute, cello and bass, but also from our love of diverse genres of music. We’re a fusion of classical, jazz, rock, hip-hop, salsa, folk and everything in between.”

“One of the most famous and gifted in the field” – The Today Show

Based on the beloved children’s books by Tomie dePaola, Strega Nona: The Musical is the tale of a friendly, magical witch who works to cure the everyday ills of the tiny Italian town of Calabria. When she looks for someone to help her with chores around the house, a young local resident, Big Anthony, responds to her advertisement.

One day, Big Anthony sneaks a peek at Strega Nona’s magic book and uses his newfound knowledge to conjure pasta from her magic pasta pot. But Anthony doesn’t know how to turn the pot off, and pasta threatens to engulf the entire town! Only Strega Nona can save the day.

This lively musical features a fresh, original score by Aron Accurso and an enchanting set design inspired by the Strega Nona pop-up book. It illustrates the importance of the saying, “Be careful what you wish for, lest it come true,” and also demonstrates that you can’t judge a pot by its pasta!

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie & Other Story Books October 24th

    10 june Mouse.jpg

    At The Lyric Thater

“One of the best family musicals to grace New York in years!” – Talkin’ Broadway

Eight winning and wonderful children’s stories come together in a show that the New York Daily News calls, “Altogether engaging – perfect for tots and perfect for adults!” If You Give a Mouse a Cookie & Other Story Books mixes traditional theater with pop and hip-hop music to create a performance that’s fun for the entire family.

Story books featured in the show include:

“If You Give a Mouse a Cookie,” the tale of a boy who shares his snack with a hungry, demanding mouse and learns a hilarious lesson about cause and effect.

“Amazing Grace,” which follows young Grace as she attempts to break stereotypes in an effort to play the title character in her school’s production of “Peter Pan.”

“Borreguita and the Coyote,” a classic Mexican story of a little lamb who uses her wits to escape a hungry coyote.

“Imogene’s Antlers” follows Imogene, who is delighted to wake up with “cool” antlers, but soon discovers that her parents and high school principal do not share her enthusiasm.

“Martha Speaks,” the adventurous tale of a family dog who literally becomes “outspoken” after dining on alphabet soup!

“Master Man,” based on a Nigerian tall tale about a man whose muscles are as big as his ego. He earns his comeuppance when he claims to be the strongest man in the world.

“Math Curse,” which playfully addresses the phobia some kids have when tackling math problems.

“Owen,” the story of a boy who can’t bear to part with his beloved blanket, Fuzzy, as he prepares to start kindergarten. Thankfully, his mother devises a creative solution.

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie & Other Story Books is recommended for children ages four and up, and will be enjoyed by all “kids,” young and old. Variety calls the show “Sixty minutes of theatrical enchantment for kids, with enough intelligence and imagination to hold adults as well. This is not children’s theatre . . . this is pure theatre with a capital ‘I’ for imagination.”

    Boyz II Men October 29th

    10 June Boyz.jpg

    At the Lyric Theater, Stuart

“Boyz II Men are . . . the most talented vocal group of our era.” – Producer Randy Jackson

Boyz II Men took the music world by storm in the early 90s with their smooth trademark harmonies, “retro nouveau” image, synchronized dance routines and polished stage presence. They are one of the most successful R&B groups of all time.

Their first release on Motown Records, “Cooleyhighharmony,” is considered a classic of nineties “new jack swing,” or as the Boyz prefer to call it, “hip-hop doo-wop.” What a debut! The album sold over nine million copies in the United States alone, earned the group its first Grammy Award, and spun off three major hits: “Motownphilly,” “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday” and “Uhh Ahh.”

And that was just for starters. Between 1992 and 1997, Boyz II Men recorded five number one pop hits and 12 top ten R&B singles, sold over 60 million records worldwide, and earned three more Grammys. Their memorable songs include “End of the Road” (from the film “Boomerang”), “I’ll Make Love to You,” “On Bended Knee” and “Water Runs Dry.” They also collaborated with Mariah Carey on “One Sweet Day,” which became a Grammy Award-winning single and topped the Hot 100 for 16 weeks.

    Dave Mason November 8

    mason 08 resize.jpg

    At The Lyric Theater, Stuart

If the Lyric house is rockin’ . . . chances are Dave Mason is in town.

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Dave Mason is a perennial sell-out at the Lyric, and with good reason. His career reads like a “Who’s Who” of rock legends: At age 18, he teamed up with Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood to form the band Traffic. Within a year he’d written “Feelin’ Alright,” a song that has become a timeless anthem recorded by nearly 50 artists.

In his 2008 album, “26 Letters – 12 Notes,” Mason returned to the songwriting roots that made him a legend, with new material like “Good 2 U,” “One Day” and “How Do I Get to Heaven.”

Throughout his critically acclaimed solo career, Mason has recorded with such notable musicians as Jimi Hendrix, Michael Jackson, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, George Harrison and Fleetwood Mac (with whom he toured for two years). He scored a top-ten hit of his own with “We Just Disagree.”

Named the greatest selling pianist in history by Billboard magazine, Roger Williams has an astounding 18 gold and platinum albums to his credit. His sweeping, sparkling arpeggios, showy technique and easy listening arrangements have made him one of the most popular instrumentalists in contemporary music.

Williams’ music has served as the soundtrack to the lives of three generations. He first came on the music scene in 1955 with his recording of “Autumn Leaves,” the only piano instrumental to hit #1 on the Billboard singles charts. This American classic still stands as the greatest selling piano recording of all time. Other Williams hits include “Born Free,” “Near You,” “Till,” “The Impossible Dream,” “Yellow Bird,” “Maria” “Almost Paradise,” “Two Different Worlds,” “Lara’s Theme” from Dr. Zhivago, and the theme from “Somewhere in Time.”

Williams, known as “Mr. Piano,” was the first pianist to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of fame, and is the only artist to receive the Steinway Lifetime Achievement Award. Readers Digest called Williams “. . . one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. His illustrious career in music is unparalleled.”
