Mark Russell March 9th
 |
At The Lyric Theater, Stuart
Whenever Mark Russell is down in the dumps, he opens the newspaper and immediately cheers up. “Some days,” he says, the “the jokes jump off the pages and write themselves.”
Russell’s self-deprecating remark belies his incredible success as one of the country’s leading political satirists. For over 30 years, armed with his signature star-spangled grand piano, Russell has taken on Democrats, Republicans and Independents with his razor-sharp song parodies that skewer the political events of the day. Does he use any writers for his act? Absolutely, says Russell, “There are 535 of them: 100 in the Senate and 435 in the House of Representatives.”
After completing a full hitch in the Marine Corps, Russell got a job singing at a Capitol Hill bar in D.C., and later landed a gig at Washington’s Shoreham Hotel that lasted for 20 years! The Shoreham’s Marquee Lounge became the place where politicians would come to get a daily dose of Russell’s bi-partisan buffoonery.

Gordon Lightfoot March 13th
 |
At the Sunrise Theater, Ft. Pierce
"Gordon Lightfoot, everytime I hear a song of his, it's like I wish it would last forever."
- Bob Dylan
‘Total Blackness’ is what it felt like for Gordon Lightfoot when, while on stage performing in his home town of Orillia for his 2002 Tour, he collapsed suddenly as the result of a burst abdominal artery. His fall tour was cancelled as a result and for what Lightfoot describes as his ‘mechanical failure’. It seems fate was at work, and not to just bring challenges but intuition as well when only a few months earlier Lightfoot recorded to multi-track several new songs using only his voice and his guitar.

Arlo Guthrie Family Reunion Tour March 15th
 |
At the Lyric Theater, Stuart
You might say that music is in the Guthrie family blood. Beginning with Woody’s classics, including the anthem “This Land is Your Land,” through decades of Arlo’s hits, such as “City of New Orleans,” the Guthries have created music that has earned its place in the American songbook.
Now, four generations of Guthrie talent are taking to the stage in the “Guthrie Family Rides Again,” performing songs they’ve written, learned together and come to love.
Along with Arlo’s standards, the evening will include a selection of unpublished Woody Guthrie lyrics put to music by friends and family. (Woody himself will even join in, thanks to newly found recordings from The Woody Guthrie Archives.)

Janis Ian March 21st
 |
At the Lyric Theater, Stuart
Since she composed her first song at the age of 12, Janis Ian has been quietly penning some of the finest music ever written. Ian is most recognized for her early hits, including “Society’s Child,” and the blockbuster tune “At Seventeen,” which earned her two Grammy Awards (out of a record five nominations).
Ian’s songs – including the better-known “Jesse” and “Stars,” -- have been recorded by an astounding array of artists, such as Chet Atkins, Cher, Chicago, Amy Grant, Puff Daddy, Etta James, John Mellencamp and Mel Tormé – to name a few. She recently published, “Society’s Child: My Autobiography,” to rave reviews.
One of Ian’s most remarkable strengths is her engaging stage presence. Her incredibly heartfelt live performances are funny, moving and riveting. It’s hard to believe that one woman and her guitar can hold an audience spellbound, but Ian does just that every time she takes the stage.

At the Lyric Theater, Stuart
Couples, be forewarned. Sister is back, and this time she’s teaching her hilarious lessons on the sacraments of Marriage and Last Rites -- or, as she explains, “Same sacrament, different marketing plan.”
As with the previous two installments of the Late Nite Catechism Series, this newest show includes plenty of audience participation. (By the way, as a student in Sister’s “class,” you won’t want to walk in late, have your cell phone ring or otherwise call attention to yourself. It may not be pretty.)
With its numerous crucifixes and statues, the set for Late Nite Catechism will bring back memories for anyone who has attended a Catholic school. For those who aren’t Catholic, Sister sets the stage for the evening with an uproarious “review” of the sacraments and other aspects of Catholic liturgy. You’ve never learned religion like this before!

La Traviata March 27th
 |
At The Sunrise Theater, Ft. pierce
Set in 19th Century Paris, G. Verdi's classic opera tells the story of a young man who falls in love with a wealthy French prostitute ultimately ending with tragic consequences. With magnificent music sweeping across 19th century Paris salons and the countryside in La Traviata, this is surely one of opera's most enduring, dramatic and melodic works. Verdi adapted Alexander Dumas' tragedy of the beautiful courtesan's socially unacceptable love for a reckless country squire. Alfredo, Violetta's lover, has his eyes opened to her profound and selfless love, but too late - at her deathbed. Sung in Italian with English surtitles.

Acclaimed classical pianist Xiayin Wang has been quite busy since we’ve last been privileged to hear her at the Lyric. In May 2009, she performed in concert at the new Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, where her program included the world premiere of “Enchanted Garden, Preludes, Book 11,” by noted composer Richard Danielpour. She also performed in recital at the United Nations, and as a soloist in California, Washington State and Florida, notably with the Naples Philharmonic and the Miami Pops Orchestra.
As if those highlights weren’t enough, Wang recorded Danielpour’s “Enchanted Garden” for Naxos in June 2009. Her CD featuring Scriabin piano music, released in May 2009, made #45 on the classical Billboard charts during its debut week.

The Beach Boys April 1
 |
At The Sunrise Theater, Ft. Pierce
Formed in 1961, by 3 brothers (Brian,Dennis, and Carl Wilson) , a cousin(Mike Love), and a good friend(Al Jardine), this band became known as the Beach Boys. Their first hit, was "Surfin'". Dennis came home and told his banded family and friend (they had already formed, but they didn't have any records, singles, or anything out, just had the whole "band" idea and all down) that they should write a song about surfing.
Well, they did. Mike sang lead, Brian drummed (Dennis couldn't drum yet), Carl played guitar, and Al played a double bass. That started it all. After that, they went on to have hits such as, "Surfin' USA","Help Me, Rhonda","I Get Around", "Fun,Fun,Fun,", etc. Bruce Johnston took Brian's place in touring in '65, so Brian could concentrate on the writings and productions.

In 1985, following their appearance on Live Aid, Queen was internationally acclaimed as the best live band on earth, with Freddie Mercury as the greatest live performer of his generation. Few performers could ever hope to match his unique talent.
When Gary Mullen won the British television show Stars In Their Eyes Grand Final in 2000 as Freddie Mercury, he began a fantastic journey with his band, The Works, which has so far taken them to virtually every theatre and concert hall in the UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Holland and New Zealand.
