Astronomy Picture of the Day
Galaxy Group Hickson 31
| |
Credit: NASA, ESA, J. English (U. Manitoba), and the Hubble Heritage Team (STScI/AURA);
Acknowledgement: S. Gallagher (U. Western Ontario)
Explanation: Will the result of these galactic collisions be one big elliptical galaxy? Quite possibly, but not for another billion years. Pictured above, several of the dwarf galaxies of in the Hickson Compact Group 31 are seen slowly merging. Two of the brighter galaxies are colliding on the far left, while an elongated galaxy above is connected to them by an unusual bridge of stars. Inspection of the above image further indicates that the bright duo trail a rope of stars pointing to the spiral galaxy on the far right. Most assuredly, the pictured galaxies of Hickson Compact Group 31 will pass through and destroy each other, millions of stars will form and explode, and thousands of nebula will form and dissipate before the dust settles and the final galaxy emerges about one billion years from now. The above image is a composite of images taken in infrared light by the Spitzer Space Telescope, ultraviolet light by the GALEX space telescope, and visible light by the Hubble Space Telescope. Hickson Compact Group 31 spans about 150 thousand light years and lies about 150 million light years away toward the constellation of Eridanus.

Martin County School District Celebrates Dr. Seuss birthday 2010!
 |
In photo: County Commissioner Ed campi reads to children at Citrus Elementary School
Palm City -- Today, March 2, 2010 marks the birthday of one of the iconic pop culture and children's authors of all time. He's written and illustrated popular books such as "One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish", "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas", "Green Eggs and Ham", "Oh the Places You'll Go" and "Cat in the Hat". That's right; it's officially Dr. Seuss birthday 2010! Fans of the rhyming and poetic author are paying tribute to his classic works, via Dr. Seuss activities in classrooms across the country.
If Dr. Seuss were still alive today he'd be 97 years old, and most likely still churning out great works. His real name is Theodor Seuss Geisel and he's got over 60 children's books to his pen name. Sixteen of Seuss' works appeared on the 2000 Publisher's Weekly list of bestselling children's books of all time. To Seuss' credit, he's also published books for adults which include the popular graduation gift "Oh the Places You'll Go" as well as a book entitled "You're Only Old Once" which is a satire about clinics for the elderly.
School district Superintendent Nancy Klein and Martin County Commissioner Ed Campi participated in this year’s birthday celebration by reading to student in the VPK program at Citrus Elementary School.

FAU to Conduct Study to Analyze University Impact on the Environment
 |
BOCA RATON, FL (February 19, 2010) – Florida Atlantic University will participate in a comprehensive sustainability program that will include a Lifecycle Assessment that will measure the overall carbon footprint of the Boca Raton campus and result in a better understanding of its campus’ impact on the environment. The process will take approximately 16 weeks to complete, and will be done in association with Boca Raton-based NextLife and Ciba Expert Services, part of global chemical company BASF.
The study will involve dozens of FAU personnel as they examine the University’s overall carbon footprint, water usage, waste and electrical usage. The findings will then be summarized in the NextLife Environmental Index, a compilation report which will help the University identify and make the necessary changes to help reduce the campus’ overall eco-footprint.
“It is our hope that other universities that are part of American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment will follow in our footsteps,” said Dr. John Hardman, visiting assistant professor in the department of educational leadership in FAU’s College of Education. “It is an exciting opportunity to get involved in a comprehensive approach to reducing our ecological footprint both locally and further afield.”
FAU faculty and students will work with staff from various FAU departments, such as maintenance, housing, engineering and physical plant, to collect data on water and energy consumption, waste management and greenhouse gas emissions. This systematic approach will serve to update the FAU Climate Action Plan, and the tools developed during the course of this project will be incorporated into the undergraduate and graduate curriculum in various departments.
NextLife is a Boca Raton-based environmental marketing, licensing and solutions company whose mission is to help its trading partners ensure long-term viability through sustainability initiatives that maximize their bottom line, while minimizing their environmental impact. Ciba Expert Services offers independent, knowledge-based services to users and providers of chemicals and performance materials across a range of industries.
The partnership with NextLife and Ciba Expert Services continues FAU’s goal to raise awareness about sustainability and offers the FAU community an opportunity to be proactive and hands-on in this approach. Over the past few years, FAU also has implemented several other Green initiatives, including the commitment to the American Colleges and Universities President’s Climate Commitments to develop a climate action plan which will guide FAU to reduce our carbon footprint and establish a date to become carbon neutral.
FAU Dining Services continues its promotion of sustainability by offering a reusable Eco-Clamshell “to go” containers, and Chartwells catering has made the switch to 100 percent recyclable paper lunch bags. FAU also created the FAU GReEn Sustainability Living Learning Community in its residence halls; promoted a carpool matching services with incentives such as preferred parking for its faculty and staff; and participated in the nationally-recognized Campus Sustainability Day, engaging FAU’s students, staff and faculty. In addition, the university currently has several LEED-certified buildings under construction on its campuses.
For more information, contact Dr. John Hardman at 561-297-3555 or whardma1@fau.edu.

Martin Youth LEADERship Goes Into the Wild!
 |
In photo: Students listen intently to the presentation by Tim Brown.
Stuart, FL -- In January 2010, the 39 students and mentors with the Martin Youth LEADERship (MYL) Program held their fifth session of the 2009-2010 school year. This month’s event (Environmental Day), coordinated by Kim Kanter from FAU/CES Education & Training Coordinator at DuPuis, and Reed Hartman. The students were afforded the rare opportunity to tour the DuPuis Management Area, at 23500 SW Kanner Hwy , in Canal Point. DuPuis is a 21,875 acre multi-use natural area interspersed with numerous ponds, wet prairies, cypress domes, pine flatwoods, and remnant Everglades marsh. The area provides miles of hiking and horseback trails, an equestrian center, graded vehicle roads, backpack and group campsites, and seasonal hunting. There is no fee for camping in DuPuis, which is on a first-come, first-served basis. There also is a group camping site off the DuPuis Grade.
On this day, the high school students were afforded the opportunity to see several bald eagles nests, herons, egrets, wood storks, and white ibis hunt for food in the marshes. Additionally, the students kept their eyes out for white-tailed deer, wild hogs and turkeys, as well as large owls and a very colorful Caccara found in the wild in western Martin County . Additionally, Nick Blount, manager of external affairs for Florida Power & Light (FPL), talked with the students about alternative energy and the solar farm in Indiantown. Finally, Tim Brown from Treasure Coast Wildlife Hospital also brought a variety of animals for the students to see and learn about.
The Martin Youth LEADERship Program is for high school students, and is in its 13th year, sponsored in part by SeaCoast National Bank, the parent-organization Martin LEADERship through the Stuart/Martin County Chamber of Commerce and supported by the Martin County School District . The group is continually striving to better serve the students that have made application, and been accepted in the program. The current Martin Youth LEADERship program is an opportunity for high school sophomores and juniors throughout Martin County to develop and enhance their leadership skills. Students must apply, and, on average, 37 are selected to participate in this comprehensive nine-month program that is modeled after LEADERship Martin County . Upon completion, these Leaders have learned about their community including history, government, business, arts and culture, criminal justice and the environment. Class members are given a rare opportunity to reach their highest leadership potential through sessions focusing on Covey’s Effective Habits and other leadership enhancing activities. Every effort is made to select a racially, gender diverse class representing various levels of leadership experience.
Coming up on Tuesday, February 23, 2010, the Martin Youth LEADERship will participate in their annual Art & Culture Day. For more information about Martin Youth LEADERship, and how you too, might become a sponsor, donor, event coordinator or advisory board member, please see the group web site at: http://www.leadershipmcalumni.com/youth_leadership.asp, or contact 2009-2010 Chair, Diana Bruton at 963 SE Federal Hwy, Stuart, FL. 34994 (772) 286-1900. FAU to Begin Two New Leadership Initiatives for Spring 2010 Semester
 |
BOCA RATON, FL (January 29, 2010) – As part of the Spring 2010 semester, Florida Atlantic University’s Office of Student Involvement and Leadership (SIL), a part of the Division of Student Affairs, will host a Student Leadership Institute (SLI) and “Leadership Reading Circles,” two new leadership initiatives geared toward teaching students how to become a positive influence in the community.
“The leadership committee and SIL are confident that these new initiatives will have a positive impact on the students at FAU,” said Michelle Perkins, director of Student Involvement and Leadership at FAU. “They will help prepare FAU students to become better leaders in a global society.”
SLI is designed to challenge FAU students interested in being a seasoned leader who want to inspire their organization to grow or for up-and-coming leaders who are looking to discover their personal passion. The institute is a four-week interactive program, and sessions will take place on Fridays, beginning January 29 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. A second, four-week session will follow, beginning on Friday, March 19. Sessions will consist of team building, as well as discussions about leadership within student groups, ways to strengthen personal leadership goals, as well as what can be done as leaders to make a positive impact in the local community and globally. Students also will have the opportunity to suggest and implement ways to improve the FAU community.
“Leadership Reading Circles” will be led by FAU faculty members Quan Cao and Barbara Pressman four to five times throughout the semester, and will allow students to meet and discuss roles of leadership, but outside of a classroom setting. The groups will read and discuss their choice of either “Dreams from My Father” by U.S. President Barack Obama or “Have a Little Faith” by Mitch Albom. Upon completion of the program, all students actively engaged throughout the series will receive a $50 book voucher.

FAU’s Frontiers in Science Presents ‘Twisting Out of Flatland: Quantum Mechanics for Secure Communication’
 |
BOCA RATON, FL (January 19, 2010 ) – Florida Atlantic University’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Science will continue its 2010 Frontiers in Science spring public lecture series with a presentation by Dr. Warner A. Miller, Ph.D., professor and chair of the department of physics in the College. “Twisting Out of Flatland: Quantum Mechanics for Secure Communication” will take place on Friday, January 29 at 3:30 p.m. in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Biomedical Science, Room 126, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton.
In his presentation, Miller will argue that the quantum laws of nature allow one to pack an arbitrary amount of information onto a single state of a photon. He also will outline recent progress made in the field of quantum communication and describe FAU’s involvement in this research.
“The quantum world in which we live in is a strange world indeed,” said Miller. “Since the laws of nature forbid cloning such a quantum state, this information can be delivered from one authenticated person to another publicly without being compromised. Quantum ensures ultimate security.”
Miller received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Texas at Austin. He is a group leader of the Theoretical Astrophysics Group at Los Alamos, as well as a lieutenant colonel in the USAF Reserves, and works for the Air Force Research Laboratory.
This lecture is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science and supported by FAU’s Lifelong Learning Society Endowed Professorship.
The reception that follows the program is made possible by the Warren Lloyd Holtzman Seed Grant, a component of the Community Foundation of the New River Valley.

STUART, FL – January 12 - 14, The Education Foundation of Martin County is proud to present the Engineers Teaching Algebra program to eighth grade students at Indiantown Middle School, Anderson Middle School, and Stuart Middle School. This program, sponsored by a grant from the Economic Council of Martin County, brings an engineer into the classroom to make algebra lively and real, while promoting math and science. It’s not a lecture or presentation, but an engaging, Socrates-style, hands-on experience with activities that are challenging, relevant, and fun.
The objective is to show the everyday value of algebra and to encourage the pursuit of advanced math. Students will be introduced to the engineering profession while learning the application of algebraic concepts. Applied math content includes fractions, ratios and percentages, estimation by proportional reasoning to verify computed results; using variables to develop equations that work as conditions vary; applying standard problem-solving techniques including understanding the problem, analyzing and interpreting data, and presenting different strategies and solutions to compare and critique.

Treasure Coast Youth Symphony Members and Alumni Take Time Out of Holiday Vacation for Rehearsal
 |
Palm City – The Treasure Coast Youth Symphony last evening celebrated a moment of reunion. Current TCYS members and alumni enjoyed a dinner and social before a rigorous rehearsal preparing for this Spring’s schedule.
The Treasure Coast Youth Symphony is composed of the most talented student musicians, selected by annual audition, from Indian River, St. Lucie and Martin counties. The orchestra performs standard and classical literature, as well as modern transcriptions of Broadway scores. With the 2009-2010 season, the orchestra celebrates its twenty-second year of music on the Treasure Coast.
The Treasure Coast Youth Symphony provides challenging experiences in orchestral and individual performance for student musicians, to broaden their technical skills and artistic expression, to instill professionalism, and to enhance enjoyment of their musical talents for themselves and for their audiences.
Each year, as funds are available, the Treasure Coast Youth Symphony awards scholarships to qualifying members of the orchestra. Our young musicians use the scholarships to continue their music education during a summer music program of their choice or at the college level if entering a music curriculum in the fall, or to assist with private lessons or purchase of a musical instrument. At the end of the 2008-2009 season, the orchestra awarded scholarships totaling $9500.00.
The Treasure Coast Youth Symphony is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization and obtains funding through orchestra member dues, private contributions and performance revenues. The conductors, students, parents and all others involved spend countless volunteer hours managing, rehearsing and supporting the activities of the symphony.

The Foundation accomplishes this mission through programs and activities that engage the music industry and cultural community as well as the general public. The Foundation works in partnership year-round with The Recording Academy to bring national attention to important issues such as the value and impact of music and arts education and the urgency of preserving our rich cultural heritage.

Kindergarteners at Citrus Grove Elementary Go Green
 |
In photo: Mrs. Bakkedahl's little green helpers (Kindergarten Class at Citrus Grove Elementary)
Palm City, FL— Kermit the frog often laments that, “It ain’t easy being green.” But Kindergarten students at Citrus Grove Elementary School (CGE) would likely beg to differ. These young stars are helping to create a better environment and increase environmental awareness. All one has to do is look at the 2, 8-foot Royal Poinciana trees which were recently planted at the school.
Principal Tyson Villwock said the trees were planted after receiving them as a donation from Travis Anstett, owner of Gardens of the Treasure Coast, a local landscape and edible garden design company. "The trees help replenish and clean the air," says Laura Bakkedahl, Kindergarten teacher at CGE.
Anstett would like to see this gesture become a local program for the schools in the community as a way to teach the next generation about horticulture and the environment. “The project is designed to make our schoolyard greener, and in the process, teach students valuable lessons on various aspects of our environment,” Villwock explained.
Mrs. Bakkedahl’s Kindergarten class is responsible for the recently planted trees and, as part of their curriculum, will determine how much they grow over a given year.
“Our agenda is simple. It’s to make a beautiful green space,” says Anstett.
CGE staff members and Gardens of the Treasure Coast will continue to provide the horticultural care during school holidays.

IM GOING TO HARVARD!!!!!!
 |
Jensen Beach -- My name is Joseph Smith. I attend Jensen Beach High School where we “S.O.A. R” for excellence. I am currently now in the 10th grade as an Honors and AP student. At Jensen Beach High School, I am on their Debate team competing at a varsity level. The year before, I placed at every tournament with 1st place being the highest Honor. I received first place during a Debate tournament where I did an event called Declamation where I took a speech called “We Shall Overcome” by President Lyndon Baines Johnson, and memorized ten minutes of that piece. In that case of time, three Ivy League universities had shown interest in me which were: Cornell, Yale, and Columbia. This past summer, I was a recipient of the Presidential Challenge Scholarship offered through Indian River State College which in turn has given me an opportunity to attend their school for 2 years.
However, I come to you in need of your help. The reason why is because every year in Debate we venture out to attend prestigious universities that host a Debate tournament at their school. Last year, the varsity members of my team went to Emory University. This year Harvard University is the chosen trip for this years’ invitational tournament. The cost of me going to this opportunistic trip is 900 dollars. The trip to attend Harvard University will take place on Valentines Day weekend. I am financially unfeasible to pay my way for this trip, for this is a once in a life time experience. The knowledge that I will grasp from Harvard is more experience as a Debater, my skills as a Debater will be strengthened and I will learn more on how to speak more proficiently. I am a type of person who sets goals both long and short term and I tackle those goals. With your help, I am able to get a step closer in achieving my goals for the betterment of myself. For, I am aware of the amount of hard work that comes behind climbing that ladder of success. I can’t do this by myself for I need you as a good support system to help me rise to that next step.
It is by Christopher Columbus that I stand in truth in working hard. With his words of encouragement I close in saying: “By prevailing over all obstacles and distractions, one may unfailingly arrive at his chosen goal and destination.” Thank You. You can contact me at (919)-523-2451 and by email: josephs104@yahoo.com for further information.
