It was an event-filled weekend for the Wellington Wave U9 Boys White team who made the journey to Orlando to compete in the annual Disney’s Memorial Day Soccer Shootout 2011.
After months of fundraising, the team of nine boys along with Coach Gus Betzer and Assistant Coach David Diaz entered the competition in the hopes of playing different teams from around the state that they do not have the opportunity to play in South Florida.
While some competitors came from the Miami area, the teams met each other for the first time at the awe-inspiring ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Kissimmee. After defeating the Cutler Ridge SC Fury, the Brandon FC Flames Yellow, and West Pines United White in the preliminary competition, they advanced to the semi-finals in an action-packed game and defeated Miami Lakes Black 6-5.
The Final matched Wellington Wave against Doral Soccer. The Wellington boys won the championship by a score of 9-3. The advanced skills demonstrated by this amazing team earned them the title of Tournament Champions. Congratulations are in order for the team, the coaches and the parents who supported them and made this incredible weekend possible!
