New Treasure Coast Cancer Initiative (TCCI) Announced!
Coming together for a cause, local physician’s team up to start the Treasure Coast Cancer Initiative.
Dr. Vivek Kaul, Pulmonary Medicine, P.A., and Dr. Devang Patel, Pulmonary Medicine, P.A..
By: Jeannie Ferarra
STUART, FL.---In February 2012, several local physicians and health care professionals have recently made the conscious effort to demonstrate their commitment not only to the Hippocratic Oath, but to put into action two parts of the modern translation; “I will prevent disease whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure.”
Moreover, TCCI is founded on the belief that, “I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligations to all my fellow human beings, those sound of mind and body as well as the infirm” (Tyson, P., NOVA online, March 2001). The premise of the group is to bring awareness to coordinating all the medical pieces of the process together; education, screening, new technologies, cancer care, and the prevention of smoking.
Hence, under the guidance of Angie Swenson, and Dr. Sunil Gandhi, MD; there is an exciting new group of dedicated physicians that have formed TCCI. The focus of TCCI’s mission is community outreach and education combined with physician resources and information. The first of many campaigns to come will focus on Lung Cancer awareness and prevention, dubbed, “Operation Universal Screening,” initiated by the theory that was used by Dr. Alpana Desai, and the Susan G. Komen Foundation that had encouraged the mammography movement. TCCI takes this thinking one-step further, by understanding the almost military-tactical approach required to seek out the enemy of all humans that is cancer.
Dr. Robert Dermarkarian, Dr. Michael Sweet, Dr. Kasem Charnvitayapong - Pulmonary & Internal Medicine Associates, Dr. Vivek Kaul, and Dr. Devang Patel - Pulmonary Medicine, PA, Dr. Prashant Patel, and Dr. Alpana Desai - Stuart Oncology Associates, Dr. Sunil Gandhi - Martin Memorial Surgical Group, Dr. Eliot Budnick - Stuart Diagnostic Center, and Angie Swenson - MEDSTAT Urgent Care Centers have joined forces to inform Treasure Coast residents of the dozens of progressive approaches to advancements in Lung Cancer treatment result in more positive outcomes. TCCI wants to encourage and bring awareness to the forefront regarding coordination of four strategies in “Operation Universal Screening,” are screening, education, promotion of new technologies available, and the advances in cancer care; all of which focus on prevention and early detection.
Coming soon will be a series of community-based seminars that will be held throughout the year to discuss cutting-edge advances in lung cancer prevention, detection, and treatment. Please see the group’s website: wwwtreasurecoastcancerinitiative.org or join them on FaceBook® for dates and times. The seminars will be FREE and open to the public beginning in March 2012.
ATTENTION………..
Based on the National Caner Institute, the Lung Cancer Screening Guidelines are:
Are you a heavy smoker or former smoker?
Are you 55-74 years old?
Less than 10 years since quitting?
No personal history of cancer?
No signs or symptoms of lung disease?
If so…….

RIVER THUNDER -SPEEDBOAT SPECTACULAR
Stuart Sailfish Regatta is returning! April 14th & 15th

STUART - The rush and roar of what's already regarded as one of the most hotly anticipated events of the season is returning to Stuart after a hiatus spanning more than two decades - the Stuart Sailfish Regatta!
April 14 - 15 will feature competitors from across the United States and Canada as dozens of powerboats will race on the northeast side of the new Stuart Causeway - the very staging ground where the original regatta took place in the mid-60s through the late '80s.
Organizers, who have been planning this event for more a year, are expecting thousands of families, spectators and power-boat enthusiasts from around the county, across the Treasure Coast and throughout the region to line up and witness this visual and auditory feast of power, performance and velocity. And the Stuart Causeway is apt to offer a first-class view of the racing action as well as how the crews prepare the boats for the competition.
Sanctioned by the American Power Boat Association (APBA) - the premier powerboat racing authority - the Stuart Sailfish Regatta will showcase an international collection of accomplished racers who steer sleek, space-aged-looking vessels around turns at pulse-pounding speeds with agility, concentration and split-second decision-making. While the water on the causeway is usually serene, this surface - unlike a paved race track- is anything but flat. The unpredictability of the watery courses taxes the talents of the driver and his pit crew.
"Stuart Sailfish Regatta is more than a boat race," said Rusty Sedlack. "It has an incredibly passionate fan base that willingly travels to events and naturally makes major economic contributions to the area it visits. And the display of risk, talent and technology is so mesmerizing it easily converts onlookers into fans, making for a major festival for the surrounding communities. We're confident everyone who comes out will enjoy some great family fun and this will event will revive the annual spectacle of boat racing on the river that much of our community fondly recalls-and a new generation of fans are sure to savor."
Stuart Sailfish Regatta will feature a tough field of competitors from among the different classes of boats. There will be 5 Liters, 2.5 Stocks, 2.5 Modifieds, Jersey Speed Skiffs, Pro Comp Flat Bottoms, Vintage boats.
Special features include the Grand Prix class of Inboard Hydroplanes-established as the fastest Inboards in the world-projected to achieve speeds of more than 150 mph. Attendees will get a rare opportunity to visit "Vintage Alley" - a collection of classic vintage crafts displayed to demonstrate early boat racing ingenuity and the quantum leap in Hydroplane racing technology that has defined the industry since. Racers will be available for questions, pictures and autographs.
Respect for the "race track" - an enclosed, 1-mile oval - is evident through more means than how cautiously racers navigate the course turns. Event organizers are exercising their collective environmental ethos to ensure maximum protection of marine wildlife and minimal impact on natural resources. Coordinating with Florida Fish & Wildlife to monitor manatee activity from an ultra-light aircraft, the Regatta team is also implementing measures to reduce any vessel interference with Johnson's sea grass. The races may be heavy on the throttle, but the Stuart Sailfish Regatta has pledged to leave as light a footprint as possible on our natural resources.
Serving to benefit the U.S. Sailing Center, the Children's Museum and the Maritime & Classic Boat Museum - the trio of esteemed nonprofits that anchor the "Cultural Corridor" off Indian River Drive-the Stuart Sailfish Regatta offers an array of activities for the entire family. Attendees will enjoy live music and choose from a variety of vendors for food, drinks and unique merchandise. Children will enjoy the Kids Zone.
The growing list of our proud sponsors includes Captec Engineering, Cuozzo Design Group, Crossroads Environmental, Southern Eagle Distributing, Seacoast National Bank, Cook Electric, Leighton Security, and AW Communities Management.
Off-site parking will be announced soon and shuttle service available during the whole weekend.
Spectators are encouraged wear sunscreen. Bleachers are in VIP area only.

City of Stuart Converts Employee Parking Spaces to Public Use

Reconfigured Lots Increase Downtown Public Parking by 24 Spaces
STUART, FL – January 19, 2012 – The City of Stuart this week announced it has converted 24 spaces in three downtown parking lots to public parking. The spaces, in the parking lots in front of City Hall at 121 SW Flagler Avenue and adjacent to the City Hall Annex at 300 St. Lucie Boulevard, were previously designated for employees of the city Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Effective this week all employee parking has been relocated to the lot in front of the former Dockside Restaurant, making all 76 spaces in the three city hall lots available to the public. In addition, the Dockside lot will be available for public parking on weekends and weekdays after 5:00 p.m.
“The availability of convenient parking is vital to the success of our downtown shops and restaurants, as well as the Lyric Theatre and Lyric Flagler Center,” said City Manager, Paul Nicoletti. “The city hall parking lots are the closest lots to historic downtown shopping and dining. Relocating employee parking is one way we can support our businesses by making it easier for customers to patronize these downtown locations.”
New signage has been installed at all three locations designating the lots as public parking. The lots will be subject to the same three hour parking guidelines that are in place throughout the downtown area. The Sailfish Shuttle will continue to provide service to downtown from all parking lots in the area including the city hall lots and the Kiwanis Park and Sailfish satellite lots.
The City of Stuart is a coastal community of approximately 16,000 on the East Coast of Florida. The local economy focuses on trade and services with a stable population base that includes approximately 30-percent retirees. The city’s utility services provide water treatment, distribution and collection and wastewater treatment and disposal to the 6.8 square-mile city as well as some unincorporated parts of Martin County. The city is directed by the Board of Commissioners, which meets on the second and fourth Monday of every month at 5:30 in the City Hall Chambers at 121 SW Flagler Avenue, Stuart. VSA Expands in 2012 & Will be Featured at the 26th Annual Home & Garden Show!
In photo: VSA student Christopher Carnes (age 7), with his original oil painting on canvas with parental permission. Photo courtesy: provided.
Stuart -- Visionary School of Arts (VSA) expands in 2012, and on March 2-4, 2012, VSA will be featured as a the new addition of a juried fine arts exhibition at the 26th Annual Home & Garden Show featuring the Martin County Orchid Society presented by the Stuart/Martin County Chamber of Commerce at the Martin County Fairgrounds.
Director, Lynne Barletta began teaching in 1980, piloting the Art taught by Artists programs in the Denver public schools. A professional artist since age 14, Barletta attributes much of her own art success to parents who encouraged her in the arts at an early age, placing her in private studies. “I loved my art studies at University of Northern Colorado, but I was most inspired by Master Pastelist Dee Toscano, and Betty Edwards, author of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain (1999). I studied with each of them in the early 80’s, and still use their techniques to teach children and adults very effectively today,” mentions Barletta
Due to the overwhelming success of the programs offered in 2011, VSA has expanded their services and their staff, along with Barletta, VSA is also co-directed by Alicia Posluszny; and the two have added three more experienced art teachers to the staff for the new year. Student interns also volunteer their time, as assistant teachers and mentors, bringing a full variety of fine art experience to each student. VSA’s upcoming spring semester will offer expanded services to include drawing, watercolor, acrylic, oil, sculpture, and ceramics. Students may also take classes on site for plein air painting and are taught how to prepare for competition entries.
Barletta also announced that, “We are thrilled to be invited to be featured; and to help promote a partnership between business and the arts in our community. On March 2-4, the Visionary School of Arts will be featured as a the new addition of a juried fine arts exhibition at the 26th Annual Home & Garden Show featuring the Martin County Orchid Society presented by the Stuart/Martin County Chamber of Commerce at the Martin County Fairgrounds.”

Stuart Colorado Avenue Business District Improvement Project Receives $750,000 in CDBG Funding
Grant Will Fund Commercial Revitalization of Gateway Business District
STUART, FL – December 22, 2011 – The City of Stuart Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) announced today it has been awarded a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for Commercial Revitalization from the Florida State Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) for the Colorado Avenue Business District Improvement Project. According to the DEO website, the project was ranked second out of five applicants and received 100% of the $750,000 the CRA applied for. The balance of the $1.2-million project will be covered by matching funds from the CRA. The agency anticipates receiving a grant contract in early January and beginning work as early as spring 2012.
“In this new economy, it is more critical than ever that the city look at creative ways to compete with surrounding business communities. This project has enormous potential to improve the climate for existing businesses in the Colorado Avenue corridor, as well as attract new business and jobs to the area,” said CRA Administrator, Teresa Lamar-Sarno. “We are very excited to get word of the funding, and appreciative of the hard work of the many community organizations, businesses and individual citizens who came together to support the project.”
The plan, which redesigns the stretch of Colorado Avenue between U.S. 1 and Dixie Highway, would reduce auto traffic speeds, improve pedestrian and bicycle access, increase parking, and improve visibility and access to businesses along the roadway. “These improvements are in keeping with the city’s CRA plan,” said Lamar-Sarno. “The CRA vision and the revised plan approved in 2009, identify Colorado Avenue as a key area for improvement with traffic calming and streetscaping. Cities across the country that have completed similar projects have seen Improvement Project Receives CDBG Funding reduced vacancy rates and increased private investment, sales tax revenue, and property values.” Other aspects of the project include widening sidewalks, adding landscaping, creating drivable medians, and improving the overall connectivity to the historic downtown area.
Before applying for the grant, the CRA undertook an extensive community input process through public hearings and community meetings. The final plan received unprecedented support from businesses and community groups, many of whom took the time to write letters of support for the grant application, sighting the projects economic and quality of life benefits.
The City of Stuart Community Redevelopment Agency was created in 1986 to eliminate slum and blighted conditions in its communities and re-established and expanded in 1998 and 2002. The CRA is directed by the Community Redevelopment Board (CRB) and implements the objectives, programs and projects defined in the CRA Plan adopted by the City of Stuart in August 2002. The CRB meets the first Tuesday of every month at 4:00 in the City Hall Chambers at 121 SW Flagler Avenue, Stuart. For more information, please visit www.cityofstuart.com.

Sailsurprise In Paradise

By: Dick Hall
Port Salerno – You may ask; why do people move to or visit The Treasure Coast and Martin County during the Christmas and New Year Season. The ability to spend a quiet Sunday afternoon with Captain Corky and his first mate Sue is one reason.
Last weekend members of the local business community accepted an invitation from Captain Corky to join he and his first mate for a demonstration cruise. It certainly was well worth it.
Join Roger, Mona, Andrew, Dan Rochelle myself and my wife Robin and others for an afternoon of relaxation.
Their catamaran sailing trips offer relaxed and fun camaraderie, comfortable accommodations, fabulous meals, beautiful scenery, storied locations and the adventure of fast, exciting sailing. Surprise carries three large sails including a large asymetric spinnaker. We have sailed her at 18.6 knots.
Surprise has a new home port on Florida's east coast. Located at Stuart on the St. Lucie River, our dock is in Manatee Pocket at the Port Salerno Fish House Art Center.
They now offer half and full days on Florida's East Coast at Stuart and they add these cruises to weekends and weeks to points south and east, south from Stuart to Miami, to the Keys and to the Tortugas. East to the Bahamas to the Turks & Caicos and on to the Caribbean is also on the available itineraries.
They come from up north where they have done extensive East Coast sailing and growing up on the waters of New England and know the cruising grounds from Georgia to the Canadian Maritimes. Offerings in summer can include points north to storied locations such as New Bedford, Nantucket, Provincetown and Bar Harbor.

Steinhausen Gallery Celebrates International Art Using 21st Century Technology

In photo: Susan Steinhausen observes an interview with Columbian artist Marcela Gomez live via Skype
Stuart -- Fine art from around the world was showcased on Saturday evening at Steinhausen Gallery in Stuart. Included in this showing were two interviews via Skype with the original artists from their home country in Columbia.
Skype is a software application that allows users to make voice and video calls and chat over the Internet. Calls to other users within the Skype service are free, while calls to both traditional landline telephones and mobile phones can be made for a fee using a debit-based user account system. Skype has also become popular for its additional features which include instant messaging, file transfer, and videoconferencing. Competitors include SIP H.323 based free software Empathy, Linphone, Ekiga but primarily the Google Talk interface supported by Google Chrome and released as the WebRTC standard proposal is expected to provide Skype's long term competition, as it is based on the same codec technology (developed by Global IP solutions) as Skype itself.
The show which will continue through December has work from Scott Buccino, sculpture, Lilith Nielander jewelry, Marcela Gomez, Sylvia Garcia, Juliana Duque and Peter Laughton.

Florida Redevelopment Agency Recognizes City of Stuart with Creative Partnership Award for Extreme Martin Makeover – East Stuart Edition

STUART, FL – October 21, 2011 – The City of Stuart Community Redevelopment Agency has won an award for its role in the Extreme Martin Makeover – East Stuart Edition. The 2011 Roy F. Kenzie Award for Management Program/Creative Partnership was presented at the Florida Redevelopment Association Awards Dinner in Orlando last night. The project is one of only 12 statewide to receive the recognition and the only one recognized in its category.
With the Extreme Martin Makeover – East Stuart Edition, the Stuart CRA maximized public-private partnerships, participation, improvements, and funds to complete exterior repairs, painting and landscaping on 17 homes in the community. The project leveraged a CRA investment of less than $7,000.00 in funds with another $18,700 in cash donations, equipment, materials, repairs and in-kind services, and over 3,000 volunteer hours. The improvements were completed in conjunction with a neighborhood-wide street cleanup and volunteer appreciation event, and was so successful that it has become an annual project.
“By partnering with Habitat Angel, Habitat for Humanity of Martin County, Keep Martin Beautiful, and the East Stuart Main Street program, as well as the City of Stuart Sanitation Department, we were able to dramatically increase our impact in this neighborhood,” explained CRA Coordinator Teresa Lamar-Sarno. “Even more importantly, the project renewed community pride and invested residents in maintaining the improvements.”
The FRA awards committee carefully selects the winners from over 60 entries embodying the spirit of successful community redevelopment and revitalization. “Through a lot of hard work, successful partnerships and local support, these projects are completed and have helped to rebuild that community in some way,” said Kurt Easton, FRA president.
“Once vibrant and self-sufficient, economic and social pressures have led to poor maintenance, litter, and deteriorated landscaping in East Stuart,” said Lamar-Sarno. “Cleanups have short- term success, but a lack of community investment and decreasing TIF monies set the stage for a new approach. With this project the CRA was able to maximize public-private partnerships, participation, improvements, and funds.”
Founded in 1974, the FRA is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to assisting Florida professionals and volunteers in community revitalization efforts. With its mission of “transforming spaces, revitalizing places,” FRA is committed to providing a forum for its more than 300 members to share knowledge and common experiences regarding revitalization opportunities and issues. FRA advocates for quality urban economic development and urban infill, and serves as a statewide clearinghouse for redevelopment information.

Taylor Creek Navigation Lock Returns to Service on Lake Okeechobee
With the lake reaching 11 feet NGVD, the S-193 lock reopens this weekend
Okeechobee, FL -Water levels in Lake Okeechobee reached 11 feet NGVD this past week, allowing the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) to restore weekend service for the S-193 lock at Taylor Creek.
Starting October 1, the lock will be open on Saturdays and Sundays from 5:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. It will remain closed on weekdays until Lake Okeechobee reaches 12 feet NGVD or higher.
The lock had been completely closed to boat traffic since May 2 after Lake Okeechobee's water level fell below 11 feet NGVD.
Lake Okeechobee's water level has not recovered from a significant rainfall deficit that lasted from October until June. The lake is currently at 11.13 feet NGVD, which is more than 3.5 feet below its average elevation this time of year.
The SFWMD operates navigation locks to provide the greatest access possible for the boating public while maintaining flood control and water supply for the region.
The following four navigation locks remain closed:
* S-135 at J&S Fish Camp, Martin County
* S-127 at Buckhead Ridge, Glades County
* S-131 at Lakeport, Glades County
* G-36 at Henry Creek, Okeechobee County
When the lake level drops to 12 feet NGVD and lower, the SFWMD closes these locks to maintain water levels in adjacent canals and protect groundwater availability. This operational decision also ensures that boats do not attempt to navigate when water levels are insufficient to support safe travel and helps to prevent damage to manatee protection devices inside the lock chambers.
The S-310 navigation lock at Clewiston is secured in the open position to allow boat traffic to pass.
Navigation locks on the Okeechobee Waterway, which includes the Caloosahatchee River and St. Lucie Canal, are operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). Information for those navigation locks may be obtained by calling the USACE South Florida Operations Office at 863-983-8101.

Effort continues to build golf course in Jonathan Dickinson Park
We’ve heard through the grapevine that plans to build a Jack Nicklaus golf course in our wonderful state park – plans that we thought were killed, but apparently not buried – have resurfaced quietly behind the scenes. This assault on our prime open space and the wildlife within is nothing short of outrageous. [See DEFENDER No. 211 for details.]
Citizens must act now to preserve this premier park from a golf course developer who will substitute an unneeded, water consuming, pesticide loaded piece of land for our vanishing wilderness. The first step is to tell Mr. Nicklaus that you don’t want this golf course, and will oppose it every step of the way. Let’s nip it in the bud. Here’s how:
1 - Go to the Nicklaus company website: http://www.nicklaus.com/design/contact.php
2 - Click on “Send an email” at the corporate office
3 – Fill in the contact form, and submit
REMEMBER: Once we lose part of Jonathan Dickinson it’s gone forever.
2011 Stuart Single-fin Showdown

Stuart -- Hutchinson Island - Surfers and beachgoers were treated once again to one of the great South Florida experiences, the third annual Stuart Single-fin Showdown to benefit United Way of Martin County Saturday.
