Where History Meets Family History

This past weekend as I was digging our house out of the snow following what the news media had dubbed a “mini-snowstorm,” the seven+ inches we had received didn’t seem so “mini.” But as my mind wandered through memories of snowstorms past, I have to admit in retrospect that it really wasn’t as bad as some we’ve had. Just last year we had a blizzard that dumped close to two feet on us and like many Chicago-area natives, I have vivid memories of the Blizzard of 1967.

As a young child I could remember walking down the driveway staring up in awe at the towers of snow my dad had created as he shoveled our driveway. I recall not being able to use the side door for weeks as it remained covered with a huge snow drift.

We often hear weather events like these called “character builders,” and I guess that’s a good assessment. As we adapt to the environment we live in, it helps to shape who we are. In some cases, it may also alter the course our lives take.

An 1876 article in The Constitution of Atlanta, Georgia, after reporting on a particularly violent storm in Iowa in July of that year and the fatal floods that followed, reported,
“The terrific storm in Iowa, of which, the telegraph brings us an account, carried death and destruction to all in its pathway. If such storms are frequent in Iowa it is one of the best states in the Union to emigrate from. Come down to Georgia where we keep all our water in the Augusta canal.”

While the reporter who penned that blurb may have written it with “tongue-in-cheek,” the truth is events like this may have indeed caused our ancestors to move on to greener pastures—temporarily, or perhaps permanently.

Mention of the flood is included in Dubuque County History, Iowa, which I found in the Ancestry.com Local History Collection. It says, "Rockdale also was established in the early 1830s . . . In 1876, a flood destroyed nearly the entire town. All but two of the town buildings were washed away and 41 persons were drowned."

This storm devastated the town. Another article on the same page of The Constitution in describing the storm’s wrath mentions that, "Rockdale was a small place of about 200 inhabitants, built upon a creek, and containing a postoffice [sic], hotel, stores and other structures." With nearly a quarter of its residents killed in the storm and most of the town washed away, half of the original inhabitants moved on, leaving only fifty-nine residents to be enumerated in the 1880 census.

Throughout the month of March, the community may vote for his or her favorite March Molly’s Gallery artist by emailing
skayser@mollyshouse.orgor by voting online at the Molly’s House Facebook page at http://www.Facebook.com/MollysHouse.  The winning artist will be entered into a drawing for a chance to exhibit during the Molly’s Gallery 2012-2013 season.

Colleen Nash Becht is a full-time water colorist with a studio in Fort Pierce, FL.  In order to keep her work alive and fresh, she continues to paint a variety of subject matter.   Becht enjoys working “close up” with images which indicate strong color, light and shadow.  Her unique style has found recognition with a strong demand for its ownership locally and internationally.  She recently created the wine label for the Anheuser-Busch family.

Len Mykietyn received his formal education at West Virginia University, B.S., and William Paterson University, earning a B.A. and M.A. degrees in studio art.  He has also studied with well know artists David Raymond, James Andrew Brown, Ming Fay, Charles Magistro and Dr. David Shapiro.  Mykietyn has exhibited his works at William Patterson University, Ariel Gallery and now his works are exhibited throughout the United States.  He was a faculty member at the Lighthouse Center for the Arts and Indian River State College.  Currently, he is an instructor at the Anglican Gallery and Studios, Tequesta, FL.  He has traveled to Japan, Korea, Germany, France and Italy.  Many of his works are influenced by his travels abroad.

Andrea Mellon has been beading and bead weaving for 20 years.  Her work as a psychotherapist was demanding, and beading was a wonderful outlet for her own psyche.  She loves both color and texture, and found herself taking courses in glass fusion as well.  Mellon combines both mediums in her work and loves sharing ideas with others.

Betty Brown creates pottery and jewelry.

Helen Kagan, PhD, was born in the Siberian winter of 1959, in what was then the USSR.  She grew up looking for freedom in a communist State where oppression and control were a daily reality.  It is telling of her talent and determination that she obtained a Masters and PhD in Science and Psychology.  In 1991 her quest for freedom, she came to the United States  spending much of time as a social worker, therapist and counselor developing and leading clinics for immigrants, and providing healing services to those in need.  She believes that art heals.  Her art delivers the message of healing through positively charged intention, healing frequencies of color and energetically balanced composition.  She works mainly with oil paints.  Her canvases show impressionist and minimalist influences.  They are varied and vibrant.  Some are raw, some are refined and all are intuitive.  Her art reflects a colorful and deep view of life, her desire to bridge the realities and heal the past.  To learn more about Kagan and her art, visit
http://www.HelenKagan.com.

Molly’s Gallery is part of Molly’s House Art &Healing program for the patients and families who stay at Molly’s House during a medical crisis.  Thank you to Decorating Den Interiors (

Mimi McCallum's Art Reflection

Through my art I aspire to capture moments in time that relate to memories that touch our hearts. I aspire to create images of objects, places and figures with pleasing shapes and energetic color.

My “people stories” are paintings including figure in them. This is a subject I enjoy painting. My people are All People and an experience we can share. The “At the Beach” series provides glimpses of sensual and relaxing times that are the beach. The beach offers a refuge from the routine and mundane. The figures enjoy the warm sun, the wind blowing their hair, umbrellas, towels, sand in their toes and the beauty of the ocean.

STUART, FL.---In February 2012, several local physicians and health care professionals have recently made the conscious effort to demonstrate their commitment not only to the Hippocratic Oath, but to put into action two parts of the modern translation; “I will prevent disease whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure.”

Moreover, TCCI is founded on the belief that, “I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligations to all my fellow human beings, those sound of mind and body as well as the infirm” (Tyson, P., NOVA online, March 2001). The premise of the group is to bring awareness to coordinating all the medical pieces of the process together; education, screening, new technologies, cancer care, and the prevention of smoking.

Hence, under the guidance of Angie Swenson, and Dr. Sunil Gandhi, MD; there is an exciting new group of dedicated physicians that have formed TCCI. The focus of TCCI’s mission is community outreach and education combined with physician resources and information. The first of many campaigns to come will focus on Lung Cancer awareness and prevention, dubbed, “Operation Universal Screening,” initiated by the theory that was used by Dr. Alpana Desai, and the Susan G. Komen Foundation that had encouraged the mammography movement. TCCI takes this thinking one-step further, by understanding the almost military-tactical approach required to seek out the enemy of all humans that is cancer.

Dr. Robert Dermarkarian, Dr. Michael Sweet, Dr. Kasem Charnvitayapong - Pulmonary & Internal Medicine Associates, Dr. Vivek Kaul, and Dr. Devang Patel - Pulmonary Medicine, PA, Dr. Prashant Patel, and Dr. Alpana Desai - Stuart Oncology Associates, Dr. Sunil Gandhi - Martin Memorial Surgical Group, Dr. Eliot Budnick - Stuart Diagnostic Center,  and Angie Swenson - MEDSTAT Urgent Care Centers have joined forces to inform Treasure Coast residents of the dozens of progressive approaches to advancements in Lung Cancer treatment result in more positive outcomes. TCCI wants to encourage and bring awareness to the forefront regarding coordination of four strategies in “Operation Universal Screening,” are screening, education, promotion of new technologies available, and the advances in cancer care; all of which focus on prevention and early detection.

Coming soon will be a series of community-based seminars that will be held throughout the year to discuss cutting-edge advances in lung cancer prevention, detection, and treatment. Please see the group’s website: wwwtreasurecoastcancerinitiative.org or join them on FaceBook® for dates and times. The seminars will be FREE and open to the public beginning in March 2012.

AGING IN MICE REVERSED

The complex aging mystery has perplexed us all. What causes aging? Can we prevent or slow down its process? Based on Harvard studies and Genome Mapping, scientists have determined that humans have the potential to live 150 years. Yet, the average life span is 75 years of age. Technically, we are dying at middle age. We are not dying of "old age". We are dying due to disease or some related issue caused by the general deterioration of the body. With aging and disease being 90% environmental and 10% genetic, there should be some way of lengthening the 75 year lifespan. Finally, Harvard-affiliated medical centers have discovered the secret. They have successfully reversed aging in mice.

Mice were genetically engineered to age faster. Then using gene therapy they lengthened compounds at the caps of DNA called telomeres. The results were spectacular. A profound reversal in the typical aging symptoms occurred, failing organs revived, grey fur restored to dark, and brains returned to normal size. They looked younger. They acted younger. Their bodies tested as younger. Age old mice of 80-90 in comparable human years returned to the equivalent of middle age. "We were so struck by the findings that we rushed to get the study published," stated Dr. Ronald DiPinho, professor of medicine and genetics at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School.

The enzyme injected into the age old mice was a telomere-supporting enzyme called telomerase. As we age, our cells produce less telomerase allowing the deterioration and failure of the telomere caps on our chromosomes, damaging DNA, contributing to aging. Adding telomerase rebuilds the protective caps and restores youth. So the question, is if it works for mice does it work for humans? Yes! Humans are now experiencing the same dramatic results of telomerase activation.

When it comes to home health care for your loved ones, there are many choices. Sometimes it is hard to know where to start. When choosing, you want an Agency that takes the time to treat you with personal attention and that would send caregivers that can count on to be dependable and trustworthy.

Our nurses and home health aides have the experience and training to meet the challenges our loved ones can present. They also have something you can't teach, and that is a desire to care for people. Without that, home health care is just a business, and clients can tell the difference.

Martin County Master Gardeners Visit Bonnet House and Gardens

The Martin County Master Gardeners traveled to Ft. Lauderdale to tour the famous Bonnet House and Gardens.  This property in Florida Trust remains a pristine 35 acres in a metropolitan area.

The extensive property is filled with native vegetation and a charming 1920s plantation-style home with unusual furnishings accented with hand painted floors and walls decorated with shells from the beachfront overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

They then attended the Open House at the Ft. Lauderdale Research and Education Center where they viewed 13 research demonstration areas aimed at improving the health and welfare of Florida citizens.

which came first...the form or the function?

Basic black telephone; works right? Answers calls. Feels ok against your shoulder & your ear. Looks nice. Smells good...or at least not bad, right? The ring doesn't grate (well, at least I hope not). So its functional. Utilitarian.

In modern design language, form following function, it's downright perfect.

But what if the plastic casing doesn't smell so great. Or if the ring sounds a little like nails on a chalkboard. The phone still works (possibly even better than before if that horrible ring gets you to answer it faster). So form following function...is this phone perfect?

Hmmm. Such was the question posed during a brief lecture given by Eames Demetrios, grandson to Ray and Charles Eames (yes, those Eames), at the re-opening of Florida State's Interior Design Department (and by the way, the building is spectacular!).

An intruiging concept. For good design, form follows function. For GREAT design, form follows function follows form.

Jane Davis Doggett Art Exhibition — Talking Graphics with Waterscapes© Maritime & Classic Boat Museum March 19th through April 18th

Stuart, FL – Splashes of brilliant hues will illuminate the Maritime & Classic Boat Museum with the upcoming Talking Graphics with Waterscapes© art exhibit featuring world-renown artist Jane Davis Doggett. A special opening reception will be held on Sunday, March 18, 2012 from 5 PM to 7 PM at the Maritime & Classic Boat Museum, 1707 NE Indian River Drive, Jensen Beach, Florida 34957. Entrance to the exhibit for guests is $10 and free for Museum members. Reservations must be made in advance by calling 772.692.1234.

The art exhibit is open from March 19 through April 18, 2012 and features Doggett’s latest creative innovation of Waterscapes©. These are exhibited together with selections from her Talking Graphics Iconochromes™ wherein she expresses philosophically profound messages — proverbs, quotations and sayings from various cultures. Each artwork is produced from her original hand drawings, scanned into template segments in Adobe Vector on an Apple computer — a design process she has termed electronic silkscreening. Because the software is Vector — as opposed to pixel — images can be enlarged into prints to virtually any size, and still remain “in focus.”

Her art has been exhibited at the Yale University Art Gallery; the Tennessee State Museum; Tampa International Airport; the Armory Art Center, West Palm Beach, FL; The Lighthouse ArtCenter, Tequesta, FL; and Northern Trust, North Palm Beach, FL. She will have a featured exhibition this summer at the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine.

Jane Davis Doggett was making her mark on the world at an early age. A native of Nashville, Tennessee, she received a BFA degree in 1952 with a Special Commendation from Newcomb College, the coordinate women’s college of Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. She went on to earn a MFA degree with top honors from the Yale School of Art and Architecture where she pioneered the field of architectural and environmental graphic design. A student of Josef Albers, Doggett absorbed his inspired principles of color perception to establish her own strong artistic ability.

Doggett has had an illustrious art career in creating thematic graphic identity and wayfinding systems for mass public complexes including 40 international airport projects. This is more than any other designer in the world.  Examples include: Tampa, Baltimore-Washington, Miami, Newark, Cleveland-Hopkins and George Bush-Huston.  Each year, 20 million airport passengers are guided by her wayfinding signage and graphics. Doggett’s designs have also earned distinguished honors: American Institute of Architects National Award of Merit, Progressive Architecture Design Award, American Iron and Steel Institute’s Design in Steel Citation and two Design Awards co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Endowment for the Arts.  In addition, she received the Outstanding Alumna Award from Newcomb College in 2007. In 2008, she was elected to a Sterling Fellow of Yale.

She has served four elected terms as Commissioner of the prestigious Town of Jupiter, Florida. She is a charter member and co-founder of the Town Arts Committee.

She serves on the Advisory Board of the Nature Conservancy at Blowing Rocks, Jupiter Island, and on the Executive Committee of the Jupiter Island Garden Club, Zone VIII, Garden Club of America. For more information about Doggett and her artwork, visit http://www.jddinc.com.

Dr. Bruce Hansbrough Participates in Youth Success Day!

In photo: Youth Success Day participants

By: Jeannie Ferarra

STUART, FL. – On Tuesday, January 31, 2012, in lovely downtown Stuart, Florida Dr. Bruce Hansbrough from Harmony Healing Arts: A Creating Wellness Center (HHAC) participated in what is to be the first of many “Youth Success Day” events.

At 12:30 PM under the flagpole in Veteran’s Memorial Park in Downtown Stuart, Florida Hansbrough and dozens of other community leaders celebrated “Youth Success Day,” as proclaimed by Governor Rick Scott. What a success story or rather stories they have! Not only did they celebrate the accomplishments of juvenile justice-involved youth as they turn their lives around, but at the same time we will be recognizing and honoring one of our community partners who is largely responsible for redirecting the lives of these youth.

Dr Hansbrough and so many other dedicated community leaders understand that the rebirth of these young people has fueled the passion to revitalize and restore the lives of many more youngsters in their neighborhood, as well as to unveil a dream for the rebuilding of the community of Booker Park in Indiantown, Florida. Dr. Hansbrough recommends that each family on the Treasure Coast take the time to see and hear what is being accomplished exponentially through the hearts of a few. This event was sponsored by the Martin County Offices of Bruce H. Colton, State Attorney and Diamond Litty, Public Defender, however, expect more of our community sponsors and partners to be named at the event.

In addition to caring for patients at Harmony Healing Arts Center, Dr. Hansbrough serves as a private industry consultant for many local, regional, and national companies, and area municipalities. He was the Director of Industrial Health Solutions, a corporate health and safety company from 1996 to 2007. Dr. Hansbrough is a certified physician with the State of Florida Division of Workers’ Compensation.

Additionally, Dr. Bruce Hansbrough, from Harmony Healing Arts A Creating Wellness Center(HHAC), and Pastor Rick Ruperto from TC-4 Counseling Services a tax-exempt non-profit, have announced a new, holistic approach to addition recovery for Treasure Coast residents. Modeled after the successful Miami-Dade Drug Court program, Dr. Bruce Hansbrough and Ruperto are teaming up to offer a four-pillar program with life-changing results. Each pillar of treatment incorporates bio-psycho-social-spiritual and cultural recovery, behavioral adjustments in recovery, incorporating employment and education in recovery, family issues in recovery, and relapse prevention. The new program offers patients and families a faith-based, holistic approach toward recovery from this devastating family disease.

In conclusion, did you know that Dr. Hansbrough conducts school physicals for $20 each and then DONATES all the money back to the Adopt-A-Class program for Martin County Public Schools?

Did you also know that Dr. Hansbrough has a Military Care Program for Iraq and Afghanistan war Veterans at no cost to the veteran as a way of giving back to those who have served our beloved country? It is true…. so if your child needs a school physical, or you know of a veteran in need, please call us at 772.287.7701 Harmony Healing Arts Center 500 Southeast Dixie Highway Stuart, FL 34994-3054, http://www.harmonyhealingartscenter.com/contact.html

*FLORIDA'S MARTIN COUNTY LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS BESTOWS
Susan B. Anthony Award upon the National Equal Rights Amendment Alliance*

St. Petersburg (FL)--  Founder-President of the National Equal Rights Amendment Alliance and former League of Women Voters member Sandy Oestreich of St. Petersburg will be honored with the Failure is Impossible Award for her Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) initiative on February 20, 2012. Contact for RSVP: Betty Paterson  1-772-288-3283*.*

Martin County League of Women Voters acknowledges Ms. Oestreich's enduring and pro bono effort to achieve passage of the ERA into the U.S. Constitution.  Ms. Oestreich began her ERA career in the 1970s by marching in New York, Virginia and other states to bring the Equal Rights Amendment to full 38-states’ ratifications status so it could pass.

In 2001 she resumed her ERA campaign in partnership with Florida League of Voters while on their board and while in local elected office in 2001, speaking on the ERA issue regularly throughout Florida, the southeast, and in D.C.   Sandy says, "We only need three (3) more states to ratify ERA for passage into the Constitution.  Florida’s most influential state legislators  refuse to hold hearings to vote on ERA because they say, "ERA will 'hurt' business".  Not so.   ERA language has raised the GDP in other countries by up to NINE PER CENT, boosts state tax revenues and cuts taxpayer expenses for food stamps, Medicaid, court costs and Public Assistance!   And, ERA requires no funding."

Ms. Oestreich's non-profit corporations have grown to nearly 300,000 individual members in 326 major organizations, national and international. Her work has worked has resulted in annual ERA ratification bill filings before the Florida legislature since 2003. She helps mentor some of the 6 other states as ERA leaders legislators file their ERA bills; they refer to the ERA www.2PassERA.orgweb site's documented "Facts for Legislators".

To clarify that ERA is "still viable and contemporaneous", Oestreich's ERA Inc. joined with 3 other states' ERA leaders and Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisconsin) to create and file the brand-new U.S. Congressional HJRes 47 ERA bill on March 2011. This bill seeks to eliminate the time limit mentioned in the original Equal Rights Amendment's Proposing Clause that can sometimes cause unnecessary obstructions. "Substantive legal arguments exist to show that is a toothless objection.  We want to discard this red herring so that ERA can pass, bringing Florida and the nation into the 21st century along with every nation since WWII", Oestreich said.

Turn Your Big Game Parties Green with Smart Planning

Waste Management Offers Tips to Help Recycle, Reuse, Plan and Purchase Smart to Make Your Big Game Party Better

Hobe Sound, FL - January 31, 2012   With the Big Game just a few days away, plans are already underway for millions across the county to watch the game with friends, colleagues and family. Each year, WasteManagement sees an increase in waste generated following the big game. This year, whether you are rooting for New York or New England, or just watching for the ads, we've developed some green tips to help fans plan smarter and divert waste by purchasing better, reusing materials and recycling everything possible. It's not difficult to turn your "Big Game" party green, and make a big difference in the process.

*               Hide the Waste Can: Remove the waste can when planning and prepping your party. You'd be surprised how much can be recycled or reused when the waste can is not around. Only toss what you have to and send guests home with the leftovers in reusable containers.

*               Consolidate Parties: Get your friends and colleagues together rather than having separate parties. By bringing everyone together, you can limit the amount of unused food and beverages, which leads to less waste and spoilage.

*               Know Your Audience and Purchase Smart: If you have a large number of adults who drink beer, think about a keg versus cans or bottles. Kegs are easily reused, they are typically cheaper and you limit the number of bottles and cans to recycle. Plus, you can recycle the plastic cups. For the kids, think pitchers of juice, lemonade or punch, rather than juice boxes. Again, it eliminates waste and you can recycle their cups too.

*               Plan the Menu: Ditch delivery and go green by making your own pizza with homemade dough or pre-made crust. You get exactly what you want, without the box. Did you know, while cardboard boxes are recyclable, pizza delivery boxes are not because of the remaining sauce, toppings and cheese? Making your own means less waste, and it can be fun for everyone.

*               Serving Suggestions: Much of the food served at Big Game parties is finger food, so avoid the urge to purchase plastic utensils. Yes they're recyclable, but if you need a knife, fork or spook, use on that can go in the dishwasher. It will save money, not to mention reduce your carbon foot print. For plates and bowls, choose paper versus Styrofoam. Paper will biodegrade; Styrofoam will not.

*               Reuse or Recycle Electronics: If you upgraded your TV and electronics equipment just in time for the Big Game, don't throw away the old TV and other electronics. If they still work, consider donating them to charity so they can be used again. If they no longer work, recycling is available - check out www.wmmc.wm.comfor more information about electronics recycling options in your town.

Combined with its wholly owned subsidiary Recycle America, Waste Management is one of North America's largest residential recyclers, managing 10 million tons of recyclables. We encourage you to take these few simple steps to save you time and money, while creating a better and greener Big Game party for you and your guests.  For more information, visit www.wm.com.

Humane Society of the Treasure Coast enters next phase of development with groundbreaking

Palm City, Fla. — Over the past 55 years, the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast (HSTC) has prepared thousands of animals of different breeds and temperaments for adoption. Some come in healthy while others arrive injured or present with symptoms that require treatment. That’s why the HSTC’s next chapter is such a necessary, major advance — the building of a brand new isolation ward and the renovation of a portion of its Palm City shelter for a cutting-edge surgical suite. Construction began this month under the management of Kirchman Construction. Local architects Kelly and Kelly developed the project’s plans.

“There are no time constraints on hope,” said HSTC President & CEO Frank Valente.

“Our foster program can only handle so many sick animals. The next logical step in the growth of our organization is to create a dedicated isolation ward to treat sick animals and a state-of-the-art surgical suite for high volume spaying and neutering.”

The isolation ward will be used to treat sick dogs and cats that have illnesses that require rest and medication, resulting in hundreds of additional lives saved every year. The surgical suite will allow the HSTC to improve the high volume spay-neuter program with pre-op and post-op areas and additional services such as dental cleanings. The John Waddell Cat Room will feature a place for cats and Lucy’s Place for Dogs will be designated as an area where dogs will be recovering.

“We see hundreds of sick animals every year,” said Valente. “The addition of the isolation ward and surgical suite will enable us to improve our overall veterinary care of our shelter animals.”

The HSTC is still looking to raise an additional $1 million for its Animal Wellness Fund and to buy equipment for the new areas. Proceeds from its upcoming event, Paws and Claws, on Feb. 5, will go toward the fund. The event will take place during the Super Bowl and will feature every play, every pass and every score of the game on 10 55-inch televisions plus a huge projection screen spread throughout the “stadium” tent, the “lounge” tent and the silent auction “tailgate” tent. The party will begin at 4 p.m. at Eventmakers, 2928 SE Monroe Street, Stuart. Tickets are still available and sell for $200 for “bleacher seats” and $300 for “50 yard line” seats.

“This growth absolutely would not be possible without the generosity of our supporters,” said Valente. “We are so grateful to those who have already gotten involved and look forward to expanding our support for this pivotal project.”

For those wishing to support this project, call Karen Bellucy at 772-600-3212. For tickets to Paws and Claws, call 772-600-3211.

Jan. 27 declared as Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day

In photo: Ed Ciampi, chairman of the Martin County Board of County Commissioners, left, presents a proclamation to Jim Vojcsik, executive director of United Way of Martin County.

Stuart -- Thousands of tax dollars go unclaimed by hardworking taxpayers in Martin County every tax season.

That's why each year, United Way of Martin County and AARP team up with the IRS to promote the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

United Way and AARP also receive support from the Martin County Board of County Commissioners, who during their January 24 meeting declared January 27, 2012 as Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day in Martin County.

"Our goal is to help local residents keep more of their hard-earned cash this tax season through the VITA program," said Jim Vojcsik, executive director of United Way of Martin County.

Beginning Feb. 1, United Way's IRS-trained volunteers will assist low- to moderate-income residents with their taxes for free - by appointment only - Monday through Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the United Way office, 10 S.E. Central Parkway, Suite 101, Stuart.

Any local taxpayer who received wages or self-employment income and made less than $50,000 qualifies for this program. Last year, 177 low- and moderate income individuals and families took advantage of the program and received $252,000 in tax refunds.

Those who don't qualify for the United Way program can still have their taxes done for free through AARP's Tax-Aide program that serves people of any age on a walk-in basis at select Martin County Library branches.

Clients of either program are asked to bring the following:

*         Social Security card along with photo ID
*         Social Security for other people on tax forms
*         2010 tax return and all 2011 tax information including W-2s, 1099s and stock information

AARP and VITA sites do not prepare business taxes, expect for Schedule CEZ or forms for rental property, trusts, limited partnerships or paper returns.
Call 772-283-4800 for more information or to schedule an appointment.

Complete Nutrition owner develops “Nutrition for Kids” workshop

Jensen Beach, FL (January 23, 2012) Complete Nutrition in Jensen Beach will host a Nutrition for Kids program during the Starbucks Coffee Company and Jensen Beach Chamber of Commerce Arts, Coffee, Conversation, and Goodwill event on Tuesday, February 7, (5-8pm).  The event will be held in front of the Complete Nutrition, Starbucks, Verizon Wireless, and Dairy Queen stores at Pineapple Commons, NW Federal Highway in front of Best Buy.

Scott Hogan, Complete Nutrition owner and Certified Lifestyle and Weight Management Consultant said, “The goal of the program is to educate parents and kids on healthy nutrition principles. We expect a huge turnout from kids and parents. Nutrition for Kids will provide valuable information about kid nutrition and how to get children excited about healthy living.”

Startling statistics concerning childhood obesity and nutrition deficiencies spurred Hogan into action. “One in three kids born after the year 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime and most cases are preventable through proper nutrition. Many children are also deficient in important minerals like calcium, zinc, and iron which can affect proper development, mental focus, and immune function,” Hogan pointed out. “Nutrition for Kids will focus on a few easy ways to prevent these deficiencies and improve kids’ eating habits.”

Doug Hencken, manager of Starbucks, organized the event in cooperation with the Jensen Beach Chamber of Commerce and the Entrepreneurship Foundation, Inc to benefit the arts programs of local schools. The event, proclaimed as “for the kids, by the kids”, will include student performances from local schools, student artwork, and displays from several local businesses, including a Marine Corp. demonstration.  For more information about the event contact Starbucks, 772-692-3031 or the Jensen Beach Chamber 772-334-3444.  For information about the “Nutrition for Kids” workshop contact Scott Hogan at 772-692-1666.

VSA Expands in 2012 & Will be Featured at the 26th Annual Home & Garden Show!

In photo: Lynne Barletta the founder of Visionary School of the Arts (VSA) with co-director, Alicia Posluszny, with their original work.

Stuart -- Visionary School of Arts (VSA) expands in 2012, and on March 2-4, 2012, VSA will be featured as a the new addition of a juried fine arts exhibition at the 26th Annual Home & Garden Show featuring the Martin County Orchid Society presented by the Stuart/Martin County Chamber of Commerce at the Martin County Fairgrounds.

Director, Lynne Barletta began teaching in 1980, piloting the Art taught by Artists programs in the Denver public schools. A professional artist since age 14, Barletta attributes much of her own art success to parents who encouraged her in the arts at an early age, placing her in private studies. “I loved my art studies at University of Northern Colorado, but I was most inspired by Master Pastelist Dee Toscano, and Betty Edwards, author of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain (1999). I studied with each of them in the early 80’s, and still use their techniques to teach children and adults very effectively today,” mentions Barletta.

Due to the overwhelming success of the programs offered in 2011, VSA has expanded their services and their staff, along with Barletta, VSA is also co-directed by Alicia Posluszny; and the two have added three more experienced art teachers to the staff for the new year. Student interns also volunteer their time, as assistant teachers and mentors, bringing a full variety of fine art experience to each student. VSA’s upcoming spring semester will offer expanded services to include drawing, watercolor, acrylic, oil, sculpture, and ceramics. Students may also take classes on site for plein air painting and are taught how to prepare for competition entries.
Barletta also announced that, “We are thrilled to be invited to be featured; and to help promote a partnership between business and the arts in our community. On March 2-4, the Visionary School of Arts will be featured as a the new addition of a juried fine arts exhibition at the 26th Annual Home & Garden Show featuring the Martin County Orchid Society presented by the Stuart/Martin County Chamber of Commerce at the Martin County Fairgrounds.”

Moreover, “Our students and many top artists will be presenting their art to the community. VSA also has an outreach program at Banner Lake Parks in Hobe Sound. These students will also have opportunity to display their work at this show. We feel that it is not only about teaching art, but launching emerging artists from ages 6 to adults!” says Barletta.

Spring semester begins January 11, 2012. VSA is conveniently located on the top floor of the Stuart, Martin County Chamber of Commerce, 1650 S Kanner Hwy. Stuart, Fl 34994.

Port Salerno – You may ask; why do people move to or visit The Treasure Coast and Martin County during the Christmas and New Year Season. The ability to spend a quiet Sunday afternoon with Captain Corky and his first mate Sue is one reason.

Last weekend members of the local business community accepted an invitation from Captain Corky to join he and his first mate for a demonstration cruise. It certainly was well worth it.

Join Roger, Mona, Andrew, Dan Rochelle myself and my wife Robin and others for an afternoon of relaxation.

Their catamaran sailing trips offer relaxed and fun camaraderie, comfortable accommodations, fabulous meals, beautiful scenery, storied locations and the adventure of fast, exciting sailing. Surprise carries three large sails including a large asymetric spinnaker. We have sailed her at 18.6 knots.

Surprise has a new home port on Florida's east coast. Located at Stuart on the St. Lucie River, our dock is in Manatee Pocket at the Port Salerno Fish House Art Center.

They now offer half and full days on Florida's East Coast at Stuart and they add these cruises to weekends and weeks to points south and east, south from Stuart to Miami, to the Keys and to the Tortugas. East to the Bahamas to the Turks & Caicos and on to the Caribbean is also on the available itineraries.

They come from up north where they have done extensive East Coast sailing and growing up on the waters of New England and know the cruising grounds from Georgia to the Canadian Maritimes. Offerings in summer can include points north to storied locations such as New Bedford, Nantucket, Provincetown and Bar Harbor.

Port Salerno – You may ask; why do people move to or visit The Treasure Coast and Martin County during the Christmas and New Year Season. The ability to spend a quiet Sunday afternoon with Captain Corky and his first mate Sue is one reason.

Stuart -- CHARACTER COUNTS! asks local businesses to nominate an employee for the annual Employee Pillar of Character Awards that exemplifies the Six Pillars of Character - Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship.

This year, CHARACTER COUNTS! received 19 nominations, but only six winners were selected and surprised at their places of work with a certificate of appreciation, as well as an entertainment and dining out gift package sponsored by The Firefly Group.

Medical society changes definition of ‘addiction’: It’s ‘a brain disorder, not bad behavior’

For generations society has believed that addiction, whether to substance, chemical, or social taboos, is little more than a manifestation of bad behavior. Whether it’s a child who regularly throws tantrums and acts out, or an adult whose compulsive drinking systematically destroys his life and that of his family, we all shake our heads, disparaging the action as just “bad behavior.” Recently, however, the American Society of Addiction Medicine announced that they have changed their definition of addiction to focus on the root cause of the addiction: “a primary, chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory and related circuitry.” This change moves the traditional definition from one based on behavior and process to one based on brain function.

“This, essentially, affirms what our work has shown for the past 10 years,” said Lee Gerdes, founder and CEO of Brain State Technologies®, a company that has developed and utilizes “Brainwave Optimization™.” Brainwave optimization is an advanced neuro-technology that measures brain function and provides a non-invasive modality which brings brainwaves into balance and harmony
www.neurotechtc.com. Brainwave Optimization has been used by nearly 34,000 individuals in 16 countries throughout the world, including locally in Port St. Lucie at NeuroTechnologies of the Treasure Coast.

“At NeuroTechnologies of the Treasure Coast, we use Brainwave Optimization to measure brain patterns and determine how we can best bring those brain patterns back into balance and harmony so that the individual no longer is driven by their addictions,” said, Peter Eisele, a certified Brainwave Technologist.

One client, a 47-year-old male from Kelowna, British Columbia, who wrestled with addiction, depression, dyslexia and other issues experienced all the popular therapies, with little result.  After Brainwave Optimization, he said, “I can simply tell you my results: I am sleeping better than ever, my digestion has improved and changed dramatically, my vision is more clear and sharp, my sense of smell is off the charts, I’ve lost weight, I don’t beat myself up and have day long pity-parties; unwanted urges for a drink have simply vanished.”

“Whether it’s alcohol, drugs, shopping, eating, gambling or sex, an individual’s need for a particular substance is driven by brain function,” explained Lee Gerdes, founder and CEO of Brain State Technologies®. “Addictions are not a result of bad behavior. They are a craving that comes directly from an imbalanced brain that is seeking the substance or the action to balance itself out.” The NIDA estimates that 23 million Americans need treatment for substance abuse, but only about 2 million get that help.

“My hope is that this important announcement from the addictions community will help more people understand the reality behind addictions and point them in the direction of help that gets at the root cause: brain function,” said Gerdes. “We know there are many more people we can help. It isn’t about willpower; it’s about brain power - changing the way the brain functions.”

To learn more about Brainwave Optimization and how it can help you or someone you love deal with addiction, depression, ADHD, focus, anger, hypertension, and a host of other issues, please contact NeuroTechnologies of the Treasure Coast, at (772) 380-2827, or visit
www.neurotechtc.com.

Brainwave Optimization with RTB™ is not intended to treat, cure, heal or diagnose any disease, mental illness or symptom. Brainwave Optimization with RTB™ is intended to balance and harmonize brainwaves. Individual results vary.

Orlando -- Every now and then Out2 gets photos from some of our Martin County alimni. In this case Megan Teter, graduate of Martin County HS '05 and FSU '09, has been found by Andrew Hall MCHS '07 at Sea World. Megan is wearing a Orca wet suit because she performs with the whales. What a great job for a great kid. She had so many pics taken by me when she was cheerleading she asked if I was stalking her. Now I'm worried, does she realize she is simply the victim of an "interesting" conspiracy. That's why I put her in the "Human Interest" section.... she's human and she's interesting. I say that to all the girls.

THE  “BIONIC” CHEF

By:  Paula Macri, owner of Gattuso’s Italian Market, 900 S.W. Martin Downs Boulevard, Palm City, Florida 34990  772-781-3004. You can also e-mail me at: gattusositalianmarket@yahoo.comfor any questions you might have.

Most of you know about me and my handicap and the challenges that I go through each and every day. You may or may not know about how I got the name “Bionic”. Several years ago, I had a BAHA (Bone Anchored Hearing Aid) implanted in my skull, which makes me think I have an ear when in fact my right ear is deaf!  I continue to say to everyone, life is too short, live every day to the fullest no matter what the challenges are.

I would like to continue to share my recipes with you, and, as I keep telling you, some of it will be Italian and some will be … well, something else! This month, how about some comforting casseroles?

We have had an extremely cold winter in Florida while parts of the Northeast were actually warmer than we were, and then came all the snow up north.   Now I know why I moved to Florida!

FRENCH TOAST CASSEROLE WITH BLUEBERRIES

12 slices of dry Italian Bread (you can order this at the market), cut into ½” cubes (to dry bread, place on a wire rack in a single layer and cover loosely overnight).

2 pkgs. cream cheese (8 oz. pkgs.), cut into ¾” cubes

1 cup of fresh blueberries

12 eggs

2 cups of half and half

½ cup pure maple syrup

Place half of the bread cubes in the bottom of 3 quart baking dish, buttered well. Sprinkle the cream cheese cubes and blueberries over the bread cubes.  Place remaining bread cubes over the blueberries.

In a large mixing bowl, beat the eggs, add the half and half and ½ cup of maple syrup.  Gently beat all together.  Pour the egg mixture over the bread layers.  Cover with plastic wrap and chill for 2 hrs. Or you can prepare  it the day before and put it in the refrigerator for the next morning.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.  Remove plastic wrap and cover with aluminum foil.  Bake for 25 minutes.  Remove foil and bake an additional 25 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out clean and the topping is golden brown.  Serve with warm maple syrup.

ITALIAN SAUSAGE CASSEROLE

2 lbs. fresh Italian sausage (I have this at the market)

2 cups of cooked rice (use instant rice you cook in the bag)

2 cans of cream of celery soup

¼ cup milk

4 cups of Rice Krispies

4 large eggs

8 oz. of sharp cheddar cheese

1 medium onion, chopped

In a frying pan, cook the sausage and onion together and drain the fat.  In a mixing bowl, mix together the eggs, soup and milk.  Layer the sausage, rice, Rice Krispies and cheese in a baking dish.  Pour the soup mixture over the top.  Bake at 325 degrees for 40 minutes.

MEATBALL CASSEROLE – CREAMY STYLE

1 can of condensed cream of onion soup

1 can of cream of potato soup

1 cup milk

½ cup fresh ricotta cheese (I have hand made fresh at the market)

1 package of red-skin potato wedges (in the refrigerated section)

1 16 oz. package of frozen cooked meatballs, approximately 32

1 16 oz. package of leaf spinach

Salt & pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  In a large bowl, mix the soup, milk, ricotta, salt & pepper.  Mix in the potatoes, meatballs and spinach.

Place the mixture in an ungreased 3 qt. baking dish.  Bake covered, approximately 1 hour or until heated through.

BLUEBERRY CHEESECAKE WITH LADY FINGERS

3 pkgs. of lady fingers (I have these at the market)

2 8 oz. pkgs. cream cheese

1 pint of whipping cream

¾ cup sugar

1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract

1 can of blueberry pie filling

In a large bowl, blend the sugar, cream cheese and vanilla together and beat the whipping cream until stiff.  Mix all together. Line a 10” spring pan with lade fingers on the bottom and on the sides.  Put half the mixture into the pan, place the remaining lady fingers on top with the remaining cream mixture.  Top with blueberry pie filling.  Place in refrigerator until well chilled.  Remove the sides of the pan to take the cheesecake out.  Enjoy!

I keep adding so many more specialty products which makes my market a real “gem” when you finally discover us. The Boston Clam Chowda and Lobster Bisque are shipped direct every week from Boston.

If you have not tried my new line of Hand Made Russian dumplings or fresh Pierogies you are missing some really great food.

Remember, if you don’t cook or don’t have time to cook, try one of my cooked Italian Meals to go. We can also cater your party or special event.

A dessert lovers delight, my Key Lime Pie has won #1 at the Fancy Food Show every year. Customers keep coming back for more. Another new addition is my Key Lime Pie dipped in chocolate on a stick. I also have Napoleons from Brooklyn, Italian Cookies from Brooklyn, Italian Rum Cake from Brooklyn, the best Cannoli in Florida, and a new Triple Berry Crème Brulee. I also have the most wonderful cheese cakes from New York which you can buy by the slice. Once you buy a slice you will want the whole cake!

We are known for our famous Brooklyn Bread and 9 varieties of Pierogies from New Jersey. At the end of last year we brought in a new line of pasta from Italy, tastes like homemade. We also have a whole new line of groceries.

If you have not tried our Brick Oven Bread from Brooklyn, you must try it.

Don’t forget your weekend parties. We can customize an antipasta, meat, cheese platters or dessert platters for you. If you need any event or party catered we can do it. Every weekend event can use an extra pan of homemade lasagna or meatballs.

Many customers can’t get enough of my Refill and Save Program which is one of a kind. We met a family which has owned farms in Greece and Italy for over 400 years. We receive 100% Extra Virgin Olive Oil and 12 year old Balsamic Vinegar, in bulk, directly from their farms in Greece and Italy. “Nobody messes with it” unlike most commercially imported products. You can come into my store and sample both with our fresh sweet Italian Bread. My customers tell me they are putting both on just about everything and they love bringing the bottles back to the store to refill it from our Rustic European Fusti. It is an experience and savings you will enjoy time and time again. It is a fabulous taste explosion you won’t forget.

raised over $90,000," said Tammy Calabria, the museum's executive director. "The proceeds allowed children from 12 schools to participate in the museum's Educational Community Outreach Program, free of charge. We can't wait to see what today’s event has in store."

The Children's Museum of the Treasure Coast is located in Indian Riverside Park in Jensen Beach and is open seven days a week.  They are a 501(c)3 organization with a mission to offer children and families a place to explore and learn through hands-on and interactive activities.

The Garden Club of Stuart's Flower Show and Garden Expo

In photo: ” The Hydro-Stacker™, too cool!

Stuart -- Close to 50 garden vendors display their beauty at Halpatiokee Park this weekend.

Along with the vendor displays were exhibits from the Martin County Schools Junior gardeners.

These vendors from all over the state are wholesalers assisting our local garden suppliers with sharing techniques and instructions on where and how the local home gardener can obtain the species seen at the Expo.

One of these vendors was Hydro-Fresh U-pick Farms and their “Hydro-Stacker” growing system.

Hydroponics is a revolutionary way to grow fruits and vegetables without the use of soil. Derived from the Greek words hydro (“water”) and ponos (“labor”) - hydroponics literally means “water working.” The Hydro-Stacker™ takes this technology one step further.

Easy to set up and use, the Hydro-Stacker™ is a tower of styrofoam pots filled with non-soil growing media. Drainage holes in the base of each pot create a filtration system, ensuring that the entire vertical stack receives the nutrients it needs. A base-swivel system allows the units to be rotated to achieve sun exposure for all of the plants.

The new Out2 is a photo journal featuring people, "Who they are, what they do and where they do it". We also try where their "going" to do it.
