Atlantis Reflection

Explanation: Space shuttle orbiter Atlantis left planet Earth on Friday, July 8, embarking on the STS-135 mission to the International Space Station. The momentous launch was the final one in NASA's 30 year space shuttle program that began with the launch of the first reusable spacecraft on April 12, 1981. In this reflective prelaunch image from July 7, Atlantis stands in a familiar spot on the Kennedy Space Center's pad 39A, after an early evening roll back of the pad's Rotating Service Structure. The historic orbital voyages of Atlantis have included a Hubble Space Telescope servicing mission, deployment of Magellan, Galileo, and the Compton Gamma-ray Observatory, and seven trips to the Russian space station Mir. Scheduled to dock once again with the International Space Station on Sunday, Atlantis has now made its 33rd and final trip to orbit.

Shuttle Atlantis Reentry Streak from Orbit

Image Credit: ISS Expedition 28 Crew, STS-135 Mission, NASA

Explanation: What's that strange bright streak? It is the last image ever of a space shuttle from orbit. A week and a half ago, after decoupling from the International Space Station, the Space Shuttle Atlantis fired its rockets for the last time, lost its orbital speed, and plummeted back to Earth. Within the next hour, however, the sophisticated space machine dropped its landing gear and did what used to be unprecedented -- landed like an airplane on a runway. Although the future of human space flight from the USA will enter a temporary lull, many robotic spacecraft continue to explore our Solar System and peer into our universe, including Cassini, Chandra, Chang'e 2, Dawn, Fermi, Hubble, Kepler, LRO, Mars Express, Messenger, MRO, New Horizons, Opportunity, Planck, Rosetta, SDO, SOHO, Spitzer, STEREO, Swift, Venus-Express, and WISE.

 January Aurora Over Norway

Image Credit & Copyright: Bjørn Jørgensen

Explanation: What's that in the sky? An aurora. A large coronal mass ejection occurred on our Sun five days ago, throwing a cloud of fast moving electrons, protons, and ions toward the Earth. Although most of this cloud passed above the Earth, some of it impacted our Earth's magnetosphere and resulted in spectacular auroras being seen at high northern latitudes. Pictured above is a particularly photogenic auroral corona captured last night above Grotfjord, Norway. To some, this shimmering green glow of recombining atmospheric oxygen might appear as a large eagle, but feel free to share what it looks like to you. This round of solar activity is not yet over -- a new and even more powerful solar flare occurred yesterday that might provide more amazing aurora as soon as tonight.

 Red Aurora Over Australia

Credit & Copyright: Alex Cherney (Terrastro, TWAN)

Explanation: Why would the sky glow red? Aurora. Last week's solar storms, emanating mostly from active sunspot region 1402, showered particles on the Earth that excited oxygen atoms high in the Earth's atmosphere. As the excited element's electrons fell back to their ground state, they emitted a red glow. Were oxygen atoms lower in Earth's atmosphere excited, the glow would be predominantly green. Pictured above, this high red aurora is visible just above the horizon last week near Flinders, Victoria, Australia. The sky that night, however, also glowed with more familiar but more distant objects, including the central disk of our Milky Way Galaxy on the left, and the neighboring Large and Small Magellanic Cloud galaxies on the right. A time-lapse video highlighting auroras visible that night puts the picturesque scene in context. Why the sky did not also glow green remains unknown.

Mimi McCallum's Art Reflection

Through my art I aspire to capture moments in time that relate to memories that touch our hearts. I aspire to create images of objects, places and figures with pleasing shapes and energetic color.

My “people stories” are paintings including figure in them. This is a subject I enjoy painting. My people are All People and an experience we can share. The “At the Beach” series provides glimpses of sensual and relaxing times that are the beach. The beach offers a refuge from the routine and mundane. The figures enjoy the warm sun, the wind blowing their hair, umbrellas, towels, sand in their toes and the beauty of the ocean.

CLARK ADVANCED LEARNING CENTER
RANKED 7TH BEST HIGH SCHOOL IN FLORIDA

High academic achievement, exceptional graduation rates and outstanding student success earned the Clark Advanced Learning Center designation as the 7th best high school in Florida, according to rankings released by the Florida Department of Education.  The Clark received 1,453 points, 91% of all possible points. The public charter high school is an "A"rated school located on the Chastain Campus of Indian River State College in Stuart.

"Clark students benefit from an outstanding teaching and learning environment. Every Clark student receives personal attention in our small school setting, with opportunities to  connect what they learn in the classroom to their career interests and to earn college credits while still in high school," said Maria Mosley, Clark Executive Director.  "We are very proud of our students and teachers for attaining this level of achievement and state-wide recognition."

High Schools are ranked statewide according to the number of school grade points they received for the 2010-2011 school year. Florida's high schools are graded based on scores attained by their students in the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT), graduation rates, accelerated coursework participation and performance, and postsecondary readiness. The total possible points for high schools is 1600.

Since the 1998-1999 school year, Floridians have used school grades to help assess the quality of their local schools. The school rankings, based on the points used to determine school grades, are part of the Department of Education's ongoing effort to increase transparency by providing clear measures and metrics to help parents of school-age children, educators, and taxpayers in Florida evaluate their local schools.

Clark Advanced Learning Center students have an opportunity to complete one to two years of college at no cost through dual enrollment.  Students engage in internships related to their interests and utilize technology in project-based learning.  A personal laptop computer is assigned to each student while in attendance at the school.  The Clark Advanced Learning Center is now accepting applications for the 2012/2013 school year. Martin Youth LEADERship Explores Health & Wellness Day

Stuart, FL – On Tuesday, the 36 students and mentors with the Martin Youth LEADERship (MYL) Program held their sixth session of the 2011-2012 school year. This month’s event (Health & Wellness Day), began at Publix learning good healthy food through the use of a scavenger hunt.  After a short trip across U.S. 1 to Stevy B’s Pizza and a presentation by Jessica Leslie and the consequences of Drinking and Driving. It was then off to the YMCA where a group fitness experience was conducted by Christina Wood. That’s one way to burn off all those pizza calories.

The Martin Youth LEADERship Program is for high school students, and is in its 15th year, sponsored in part by Seacoast National Bank, the parent-organization Martin LEADERship through the Stuart/Martin County Chamber of Commerce and supported by the Martin County School District. The group is continually striving to better serve the students that have made application, and been accepted in the program. The current Martin Youth LEADERship program is an opportunity for high school sophomores and juniors throughout Martin County to develop and enhance their leadership skills. Students must apply, and, on average, 37 are selected to participate in the comprehensive nine-month program that is modeled after LEADERship Martin County. Upon completion, these Leaders have learned about their community including history, government, business, arts and culture, criminal justice and the environment. Class members are given a rare opportunity to reach their highest leadership potential through sessions focusing on Covey’s Effective Habits and other leadership enhancing activities. Every effort is made to select a racially, gender diverse class representing various levels of leadership experience.

Coming up in May 2012, the Martin Youth LEADERship will celebrate “Graduation.” At Monarch Country Club in Palm City. For more information about Martin Youth LEADERship, and how you too, might become a sponsor, donor, event coordinator or advisory board member, please see the group web site at: www.leadershipmcalumni.com/youth_leadership.asp, or contact 2010-2011 Chair, Diana Bruton at 963 SE Federal Hwy, Stuart, FL. 34994 (772) 286-1900.

This morning, a surprise spirit assembly was held at JDP, so that the entire school could be on-hand as the principal announced that Mikayla had won the State award for her dedication to the school.

“Mikayla is an outstanding young lady and a true role model for her peers.  It is always heartwarming to see our students taking such an active role in volunteering in our schools.  I commend her for dedication and true giving spirit,” said Superintendent Nancy Kline.

Attached is additional information regarding Mikayla and the letter sent to her by Florida Department of Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson.

FAU Has $4 Billion Economic Impact on Service Areas

BOCA RATON –- Florida Atlantic University has an estimated economic impact of $4 billion annually in its six-county service region, according to a recently released sponsored project report to the Board of Governors of the State University System of Florida. The study was led by Alan W. Hodges, Ph.D., at the University of Florida, and Julie Harrington, Ph.D., at Florida State University.

“Universities must be fully engaged in the lives of the communities they service, and FAU clearly fulfills this responsibility on many different levels,” said FAU President Mary Jane Saunders. “Economic development, research and community engagement are three areas in which FAU is dedicated to and will continue to expand upon in the years to come.”

To put it into perspective, the $4 billion economic impact is the equivalent impact of 10 Super Bowls, 15 Oasis of the Seas cruises or seven Fort Lauderdale boat shows. The report also states that FAU has had a positive direct or indirect impact on 59,000 full-time and part-time jobs across the service region.  According to the study, present value over a 30-year period of a bachelor’s degree from a state university in Florida is $550,000, while a graduate degree is worth $1.87 million.

FAU has focused on becoming a stronger engine of economic growth in South Florida most recently through a multi-faceted initiative to support existing and new businesses, particularly those in the high-tech sector. Intensifying the university’s focus on its economic development role is one of the key initiatives of the FAU Board of Trustees.

“The FAU Board of Trustees has a laser focus on ensuring that FAU is an integral part of the economic development of our service area,” said Board Chair Robert J. Stilley. “FAU is an impressive institution, and the impact it has on its service region will only increase in importance as it develops further in the areas of research and biotechnology.”

The advent of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine will play a major role in the University’s economic development, partnering with Scripps Research Institute of Florida.  FAU and Scripps Florida have collaborated on a dual MD/PhD degree option that is offered by the FAU College of Medicine and the Scripps Kellogg School of Science and Technology. The program combines the unique preclinical and clinical training programs currently in place at FAU with basic and specialty science courses offered through the Scripps Kellogg School of Science and Technology, a school whose graduate programs in chemistry and biology are continually ranked among the top five in the nation. The M.D. degree will be awarded by FAU and the Ph.D. degree by Scripps Florida.

The opening of its 30,000-seat football stadium also had a major impact on the community, adding an estimated $1.7 million to the local economy. With more than 2,700 employees, including 1,500 faculty members, and an annual operating budget in excess of $600 million, FAU ranks as one of the largest employers in South Florida.

The University also is a charter member of Life Sciences South Florida, a regional consortium that also has established a life sciences industry cluster in South Florida. FAU also holds charter membership in MedUTech, an initiative that is focused on building the technology and healthcare sectors of Boca Raton’s economy.

FAU also has focused on increasing its outreach to local communities, recently creating the Division of Community Engagement to purse this goal. Rendering meaningful public service has long been a priority for the university. Every year, FAU students, faculty and staff contribute thousands of volunteer hours to nonprofit groups and civic organizations.

Crystal Lake Elementary Princi-PALS Visit Instructional Center

Stuart -- Crystal Lake Elementary (CLE) Princi-PALS went from the classroom to the Board Room!  The students took part in a unique field trip to the District’s Instructional Center where they learned about School District operations.   “Students need to understand what it means to serve all of the students in Martin County, know who the people are who are charged with those responsibilities, and have an opportunity to ask them about how they do their jobs,” said Crystal Lake Elementary Principal Xenobia Anderson.

The CLE Princi-PALS program is aimed at providing leadership training for 5th grade students, as well as activities that increase their communication skills and community service.

Superintendent Nancy Kline, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Frank Raffone and the District’s Executive Directors met with the Princi-PALS this morning. The students asked questions about a variety of topics, including what it is like to be a Superintendent and how technology in the classroom is changing.

Next, the students headed to the School Board Meeting Room, where they had the chance to sit at the dais and ask District staff questions ranging from Art in the Board Room to changes with FCAT testing.

“The students were magnificent.  The Princi-PALS program exposes students to incredible leadership training opportunities at such a young age.  It was a lot of fun having them visit with us; we were all impressed by their maturity and eagerness to learn more about what it takes to operate a school district,” said Superintendent Nancy Kline.

FAU’s Center for Holocaust and Human Rights Education Selects ‘Holocaust Teacher of the Year’ Awardees

BOCA RATON -- Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Holocaust and Human Rights Education has selected four South Florida teachers to receive the Gutterman Family Outstanding Holocaust Educator Award.  The awardees will be announced at the Center’s third annual Teacher Appreciation Dinner on Wednesday, January 25, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Lakeside Terrace and Banquet Center, 7880 Glades Road, Boca Raton.

“As women and men committed to engaging students with the history of the Holocaust and the contemporary struggle for justice, this year’s award recipients are truly extraordinary,” said Rosanna Gatens, Ph.D., director of the Center.  “Their lessons reflect a broad range of cognitive and service learning activities as well as the global reach of Holocaust study as it is implemented here in South Florida.  Their knowledge, skill and creativity as teachers are clearly evident in their Holocaust instruction.”

Each year, the Center recognizes an elementary, a middle school, and a high school teacher in Broward and Palm Beach counties who have demonstrated positive impact on their schools and the wider community in the field of Holocaust, genocide and human rights education.  The Gutterman Family Outstanding Holocaust Educator Award enables recipients to participate in a three-week, all-expenses-paid study tour to Holocaust-related sites in Poland, Germany and Israel, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.  The award is funded by Arthur Gutterman, an FAU benefactor whose generous contributions help sustain the Center and its programs.  The Center relies on private donations to provide professional development programs for teachers, and classroom resources for teachers and students, to support Florida’s mandate for Holocaust education.

The 2012 awardees are:

·         Toshimi Abe-Janiga, a teacher of language arts to sixth through 12 graders at Riviera Beach Preparatory and Achievement Academy, a public alternative high school in Palm Beach County. Abe-Janiga became inspired to teach more than just the historical facts of the Holocaust after visiting the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.  She organized a school-wide Holocaust Remembrance Day Commemoration event, including a visit with a Holocaust survivor.  As a result of Abe-Janiga’s focus and her colleagues’ efforts to implement a cross-curricular approach, students are now able to take Holocaust studies as an elective.
·         Rosemelda Ibalarrosa, a middle school teacher and U.S. history coordinator at Omni Middle School in Boca Raton.  Ibalarrosa initiated and organized a forum for students to listen to and learn from stories of Holocaust survival as presented by survivors themselves.  She collaborated with the school’s art teacher to teach students about peace and tolerance and guided students to create a peace quilt.  Ibalarrosa organized and sponsored the Students for a Better World Club to raise awareness of the human rights violations happening all over the work due to poverty, cultural and political differences.

·         Lila Kimbar, a fifth grade teacher at Somerset Academy Elementary, a Pembroke Pines charter school. After taking several courses, looking at her own family history, and speaking to colleagues and students, Kimbar decided to expand her Holocaust teachings beyond the mandated curriculum.  She teaches elementary students the importance of tolerance and human rights by presenting lessons on diversity, prejudice and hatred using a variety of books, community service, posters, photographs, videos and Holocaust survivor guest speakers.
·         Bruce Klansner, an instructor in the department of social studies at Everglades High School in Miramar.  Klansner, the son of a Holocaust survivor, teaches an elective “History of the Holocaust” class and is the founder and advisor of Students for Tolerance and Acceptance through Knowledge and Education (S.T.A.K.E.), which created a Tolerance Museum at Everglades High School and workshops and programs on anti-bullying.

FAU’s Center for Holocaust and Human Rights Education was established in 1996 by the Florida Department of Education to support teachers implementing the state’s mandate for Holocaust education.  Through its training, programs and resources, the Center seeks to educate students about the Holocaust in order to nurture citizens who recognize prejudice and hatred, including anti-Semitism and racism; understand that such beliefs can lead to genocide; know how to intervene again prejudice and hatred; be prepared to act on behalf of others, even those who may not know; and understand citizens’ responsibility for upholding democracy in a pluralistic society.

District’s Graduation Rate Reaches All-Time High and is the 2nd Highest in the State

Stuart -- Martin County is proud to have the second highest National Governor’s Association (NGA) Graduation Rate among Florida’s 67 school districts based on data released today by the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE).  Martin County’s NGA Graduation Rate, which does not include students who earn a GED, is 95.2 percent, a new all-time high for the District.   This is also significantly higher than the state average of 80.1 percent.  The NGA Graduation Rate is the rate used by the FLDOE in calculating high school grades.

In addition, the FLDOE released the Florida Graduation Rate, which increased from 94.9 percent to 95.7 percent for Martin County.  The Florida Graduation Rate includes standard and special diplomas, as well as regular and adult GEDs.

“Our entire community should be extremely proud of our all-time high graduation rate of 95.2 percent.  Graduating on-time within four years of entering high school is vital to our students’ future success in college or the workplace.  I would like to thank our teachers, administrators, parents and students for their hard work,” said Superintendent Nancy Kline.

Tiger Woods Visits Murray Middle School

Port Salerno -- Tiger spent the afternoon experiencing life as an 8th grader, joining students in Mrs. Lynch & Mrs. Kirsch's class for a lesson in the Tiger Woods Learning Center's forensics program.

After visiting the newly completed TWLC Campus at Murray Middle School, Woods joined in the forensics lesson that included solving a crime, analyzing clues, fingerprinting, studying evidence and questioning "suspects."

“I’m really excited to bring a Learning Center campus to Stuart,” Woods said. "This is the second time I've taken our forensics class. I really enjoy it, and so do the kids. It has gotten rave reviews from our students in Anaheim for the last five years, so it was a perfect fit for this campus. It's unique, gets kids fired up about science and helps them explore careers in the field.”

At the Tiger Woods Foundation, we believe every child deserves a shot at college. Designed to break through a culture of low expectations, our college-access programs reach underserved youth in all stages of academic life. For scholars in grades 5-12, the Tiger Woods Learning Centers provide hands-on experiences in science, technology, engineering and math coupled with college preparation workshops to create a unique environment focused on college and careers. The Tiger Woods Foundation launched its Flagship Tiger Woods Learning Center in Anaheim, Calif., in February 2006.  Since inception, the innovative 35,000-square-foot education facility has reached more than 40,000 students through its one-of-a-kind classes ranging from forensic science and aerospace to robotics, biotechnology, video production and graphic design.

FAU Harbor Branch Launches ‘Wild Dolphins’ iPad App to Inform, Empower Those Inspired by Dolphins

BOCA RATON, FL (September 21, 2011) – Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, which contributed to the rescue and initial care of Winter the bottlenose dolphin, has created an iPad application that provides an inside look at Winter’s story, background information on wild dolphin research and rescue, and ways that the public can help protect wild dolphins.

Winter’s story will be told in theaters nationwide in the upcoming Warner Bros. movie, “Dolphin Tale.” Caught in a crab trap, Winter eventually lost her tail fluke and was transferred by Harbor Branch personnel to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Clearwater for care. Winter soon became the first bottlenose dolphin to be fitted with a prosthetic replacement. Successfully using the prosthesis as her tail fluke, Winter was able to regain propulsion as she swam.

“‘Dolphin Tale’ tells a story of how one person can make a difference in the lives of others, both marine mammal and human,” said Steve McCulloch, manager of the FAU Harbor Branch Marine Mammal Research and Conservation Program. “The message of the ‘Wild Dolphins’ iPad app is the same. Our dolphin research and rescue work depends almost entirely on public contributions, and this app makes it easy for people to donate.”

The multimedia app includes several interactive components and games that allow users to explore a range of dolphin topics, including health and anatomy, threats they face in the wild and areas of research. Interview features provide perspectives from people who helped rescue and provided care for Winter.

Support opportunities contained in the app include a simple donation mechanism, a merchandise store, and for Florida residents, a direct link for purchase of the Protect Wild Dolphins specialty license plate that helps fund Harbor Branch marine mammal work.

The “Wild Dolphins” app is free for a limited time at www.wilddolphinsapp.comand is available for download at the iTunes App Store.  For more information, contact Stephen McCulloch at 772-234-0070 or smccull5@hboi.fau.edu.

Waste Management offers teachers, parents and students tips on recycling and reducing waste volume

Pompano Beach -- Next week, students throughout South Florida begin returning to their schools, which are one of the most
potentially productive, yet often-overlooked, sources of recycling and conservation in any community.  These late weeks of summer are an ideal time for teachers, parents and students to start planning "green school" programs built around the concepts of reducing, reusing and recycling waste.

Every year, schools produce millions of tons of waste that can either be recycled or reused, from paper to discarded cafeteria food.  However, The George Lucas Educational Foundation's Edutopia Web site's poll reveals that 74 percent of the 118 schools that participated in its online poll <http://www.edutopia.org/poll-does-school-recycle>  have either limited recycling programs or none at all.

"We encourage all public and private schools to have recycling programs for office paper, classroom paper, aluminum cans and plastic water and sport drink bottles," said Dawn McCormick, Community Affairs Manager for Waste Management.  "Office and classroom paper recycling can be as easy as equipping every classroom with a receptacle for used paper that's collected separately from other garbage. Recycling aluminum cans and plastic water and sports drink bottles in the cafeteria requires only a small effort and is already done in thousands of schools across the country.  Once the kids get into the spirit it takes on a life of its own."

Teachers can also prepare environmentally themed classroom projects utilizing the many resources on the Web covering everything from recycling to reducing consumption to buying products made of recycled materials.  DoSomeThing.org provides a step-by-step plan for starting a school-wide recycling program that describes all of the internal and external issues a recycling committee would have to consider to start recycling.  Its related site, earth911.org, gets into fun, innovative conservation programs, like how to travel to a prom green style.

Waste Management offers www.ThinkGreen.com/classroom, a K-12 resource in partnership with Discovery Education. Complete with standards-based lesson plans, compelling videos, interactive activities and Think Green(r) Resources to engage students and extend the learning to the home, www.ThinkGreen.com/classroomis a powerful suite of tools for educators seeking new materials to enliven environmental lessons. Teachers of children grades K-5 will find resources that will help them answer almost any question about the Three Rs of reducing, reusing and recycling.

Parents can help schools achieve their recycling goals by reducing the amount of consumables that children bring to school in their lunch boxes and by buying environmentally friendly school supplies.  For example, kids who bring their own lunch can cut waste by:

*        Packing lunches in washable, reusable bags instead of disposable bags and bringing water in refillable bottles.  If parents are worried about losing refillable bottles, buy one with a cap that can be clipped to a lunch bag;

*        Using whole fruits and vegetables as snacks, rather than packaged items; and

*        Replacing sandwich bags with reusable sandwich-sized containers.

"There's a lot of home-based common sense that can make a big difference in schools' environmental footprints," said McCormick.  "Between home and school, we have an opportunity to create a generation that sees conservation and recycling as a routine part of every day, which is just what it should be."
