AAA Auto Club South Hosts Stuart/Martin County Chamber Networking Breakfast

Stuart -- Tampa-based AAA Auto Club South and Dearborn, Michigan-based, The Auto Club Group, have affiliated and combined operations effective October 1, 2011 to become the second largest AAA club in North America. The enterprise will be known as The Auto Club Group and serve members, insureds, and other customers across 11 states and two U.S. territories, including Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Michigan, Nebraska, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands; most of Illinois, Minnesota and Tennessee; and a portion of Indiana.
The combined organization will provide membership, travel, insurance, and financial services offerings to more than 8.4 million members through a network of nearly 8,000 employees in approximately 300 office locations. The enterprise will maintain corporate headquarters in both Dearborn and Tampa. Robert R. Sharp, who chaired the former Auto Club South board, will be Chairman of the Board of The Auto Club Group. Charles H. Podowski continues as Chief Executive Officer, and John A. Tomlin, former Auto Club South CEO, is Chief Operating Officer.
As a large property and casualty insurer and one of the largest auto insurance companies in Michigan, The Auto Club Group could provide customers in the former Auto Club South region with broader access to more insurance products and services. Likewise, the former Auto Club South’s expertise in travel and the numerous cruise ports in Florida could give Midwest AAA members and consumers more direct access to unique cruise and tour experiences at competitive prices.
The Auto Club Group belongs to the national AAA federation with nearly 53 million members in the United States and Canada whose mission includes protecting and advancing freedom of mobility and improving travel safety.

Outlining the six vital steps you should take to guarantee you'll never outlive your savings.
The oldest baby-boomers are nearing retirement's homestretch, yet many of them still don't know whether they are saving enough or how to convert those savings into a lifetime of income. If you're one of those 41 million boomers who are now 50 to 64 years old, the next two to 10 years will be critical. That's when you'll need to top off your retirement savings, focus your investment strategy and figure out how to maximize your income after your paychecks stop.
If you want your retirement to be ideal as well as different, these strategies will get you off to a good start.
1. Get a Checkup
As your priority shifts from accumulating money to shepherding it through retirement, you'll probably benefit from some financial guidance.
2. Set Your Budget
The possibility of running out of money is the main reason financial advisers urge you to limit your first year's withdrawals to 4% of your total retirement funds.
3. Do a Dry Run
Before retiring, see if you can live on your projected retirement cash flow for two to three years.
4. Choose Your Date
The age at which you retire depends on several factors, including whether you will continue you to work after you retire.
5. Consider an Annuity
We now have annuity products that have a lifetime rider of 6-7.2%.
6. Roll It Over
In most cases, you will be better off moving your 401(k) money to an IRA when switching jobs or retiring.

Fenton Lang Bruner & Associates Celebrate Ribbon Cutting

In photo: Debbie Sopko friends, business associates, and Ambassador's from the Palm City Chamber of Commerce celebrate ribbon cutting
Stuart -- The Treasure Coast is a special place to live and work for all those seeking a vibrant, scenic environment that has also managed to remain relatively unspoiled compared to other Florida locations. Stretching from Hobe Sound in the south to the Sebastian Inlet in the north, the Treasure Coast beckons with miles of pristine beaches and picturesque towns. Anyone wishing to escape from hectic big-city life will enjoy the area’s many relaxing recreations such as boating, angling, surfing, golf and much more. Wildlife sanctuaries offer glimpses of manatees, tropical fish, and exotic birds. Just off Hutchinson Island, you can still see shipwrecks once laden with Spanish gold.
Downtown areas along the Treasure Coast have recently experienced a revitalization that blends Old Florida charm with exciting new shopping and dining venues. Stuart, one of these towns, reflects Martin County’s welcoming slogan “Enjoy Our Good Nature.” While the original downtown offers quaint shops, restaurants, and riverside homes, Stuart has grown into a thriving center for businesses, excellent schools, hospitals, and shopping opportunities galore. Retirees and year-round residents alike are drawn to Stuart’s friendly atmosphere and beautiful setting. Here you’ll find many of Florida’s finest gated golf communities, along with an inviting array of homes for every lifestyle.
The Mission of the Palm City Chamber is "To serve as the principle advocate of the community and its businesses, acting as the catalyst in promoting the economic development of the Palm City area, stimulating jobs and improving the quality of life."
Fenton, Lang, and Bruner’s Stuart offices are conveniently located in Monterrey Commons and Willoughby Crossroads.

The Treasure Coast is a special place to live and work for all those seeking a vibrant, scenic environment that has also managed to remain relatively unspoiled compared to other Florida locations.

Stay on Top of Your Protection Needs
By: Steven W Landwersiek | Financial Advisor
Many are aware of the role insurance plays in long-term financial security, but people often underestimate the importance of updating insurance policies as you age. The decisions you make about the best protection plan for you and your family today may not be applicable down the road, so you should frequently reassess whether your coverage is adequate as you pass through every stage of life.
Make it a goal to review your insurance needs every two or three years – and more often if a dramatic event occurs in your life. A number of personal milestones and life events can change circumstances enough to require alterations to your protection plan.
Newly graduated or on your own:
When you set out on your own, you may need to buy auto and home insurance for the first time. If you’re renting, consider renter’s insurance to protect what you own. Health insurance may be available through your workplace – or if you’re unemployed and under age 26, you can still be included in a health plan carried by a parent. An individual policy is another alternative. As you develop your budget, consider the costs associated with your auto, home and health insurance as part of your essential expenses.
You may also want to research your options for disability income protection if you’re dependent on a single income to maintain your lifestyle.
Married with a family
At this stage, life insurance is critical if you have a spouse or children who are financially dependent on you – explore a whole life or universal life policy that includes a savings element designed to build cash value over time.
Disability income protection is even more important at this point in life. The probability of a white-collar worker becoming disabled for 90 days or longer between the ages of 35 and 65 is 27% for men and 31% for women.1 Such an event could detract from your ability to meet current income needs, but it would also critically impact your capacity to keep long-term savings plans on track for retirement or college funds.
Pre-retirement years
Your protection needs may move in a different direction in the last one or two decades before you retire. If you feel financially secure and your children are financially independent, you may think life insurance is no longer vital – but if you want to pass your legacy on to your heirs or desired charities, life insurance can play a role to in protecting it. Proceeds from a life insurance policy can help offset taxes due at death and may help preserve the value of your estate for your beneficiaries.
It’s also important to recognize that you may need assistance in the form of long-term medical or nursing care in the future. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates that seven out of every ten individuals over age 65 today will require at least some type of long-term care during their lifetime2, and can be one of the most costly expenses in retirement. A long-term care policy can protect you from depleting your assets in the event you need extended nursing home or in-home health care at any point in your life. Keep in mind that the sooner you purchase coverage, the less expensive it tends to be.
Retirement age
When you retire, some of the changes in your protection plan are obvious. For example, if you aren’t earning income from a job, you no longer need disability income insurance – but other issues take on greater importance.
You may want to protect your retirement savings from the impact of market volatility. This could include using annuities to generate a guaranteed income stream regardless of future market fluctuations.3
If you retire before reaching age 65 (the eligibility age for Medicare), make sure you have another health plan option in place when you leave your job. Your company may allow you to maintain your workplace coverage, but often at your own expense. Even when you become eligible for Medicare, consider a Medicare Supplement policy to help limit out-of-pocket costs for expenses not covered by Medicare. Keep up on your long-term care coverage as well.
Reasons for reviewing
As you go through life, individual events may also change your definition of “adequate insurance coverage.” You should review your protection needs if you’re:
• Getting married or going through a divorce
• Adding children to your family
• Changing jobs
• Having an elderly parent move into your home
• Inheriting money
• Buying or selling real estate and other high-value items
Be sure to consult with your financial advisor or insurance professional regularly to make certain your protection strategy keeps pace with your life.

Sewall's Point -- The “Power Lunch Bunch” is a ladies' group that provides Networking and Support, two basic elements that make it the huge success it is today!
What began as an afternoon luncheon for ten friends, has grown into a calling list of over three hundred women, and an attendance of over one hundred women at the monthly luncheons. Anne Schafer, the founder of the Ladies Power Lunch, attributes the success of the group to great networking and support for one another!
The energy that they all have is wonderful! The friendship and service given is awesome! As they go into their tenth year they look forward to many new friendships, togetherness, much laughter, meeting and greeting many, more women of interest .............” we have much to be thankful for!”

The Winning Attitude Tipping Point

by Holly Green
As business leaders, everything we do should focus on setting our organizations up to win. But we can’t do it all ourselves. Which means we also need to get our employees obsessive and relentless about winning – a task much easier said than done.
If you’re struggling to build a winning attitude in your organization, I have some encouraging news. Scientists at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have found that when just 10 percent of the population holds an unshakable belief, their belief will always be adopted by the majority of the society.
Not some of the time, but always. Which has huge implications for business leaders trying to shape attitudes and opinions in their organizations.
According to the scientists, when the percentage of a population committed to a certain idea or opinion is less than 10 percent, that idea or opinion will spread very slowly, if at all. However, once that percentage climbs above 10 percent, the idea will spread like wildfire. As long as proponents of the idea hold firm to their belief, once they begin to talk about it, opinions about that belief will begin to gradually change and then at some point suddenly shift.
As an example, the scientists point to last year’s tumultuous events in Tunisia and Egypt, where dictators who held complete power for decades were toppled in just a few weeks.
Clearly, the uprisings benefited from the use of social networking tools, which made it easier to connect with others in the population. But the scientists assert that the type of network does not influence the 10 percent tipping point. As long as the percentage of committed opinion holders remains at 10 percent or higher, it will eventually become the majority opinion, regardless of how or where it got started or spread throughout the society.
For business leaders, this means we can leverage our efforts to build a winning culture by engaging informal thought leaders throughout the organization. And once we get that critical 10% to care as passionately about winning as we do, the majority of employees will soon adopt the same point of view.
How do you engage those thought leaders?..... Click here to find out
Palm City Animal Medical Center Receives International Recognition, Accreditation
Palm City, Fla. (Jan. 5, 12) – Palm City Animal Medical Center has recently received accreditation following a comprehensive evaluation by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). The evaluation includes a quality assessment review of the hospital’s facility, medical equipment, practice methods and pet health care management.
“It has certainly been a landmark year for our clinic,” Sentell said. “The American Animal Hospital Association accreditation is meaningful to every member of our staff, and serves as validation that their commitment to providing quality animal care is recognized and rewarded.”
Only 15 percent of small animal veterinary practices in the U.S. have achieved AAHA accreditation. “Palm City Animal Medical Center belongs to a select group of practices that are committed to meeting the standard of veterinary excellence,” says Gregg Takashima, DVM, AAHA president.
In order to maintain accredited status, Palm City Animal Medical Center must continue to be evaluated regularly by the association’s consultants. “AAHA hospitals pass a stringent evaluation of over 900 standards covering patient care, client service and medical protocols. By attaining accreditation, Palm City Animal Medical Center is demonstrating its dedication to offering the best care to its patients and clients,” Takashima added.
“I have a long history with the Palm City Animal Clinic. I work with rescued animals for the Humane Society, and whether it’s those animals or my own two dogs that I bring to them, the care they receive is always above and beyond,” said Audrey Crandall who has been a client of Palm City Animal Clinic for 11 years. “There have been times when the clinic was closed and after I called Dr. Sentell directly, he told me to bring my pets straight to his house - he’s just a wonderful man and caring veterinarian. His staff is the same way, and it’s easy to see the passion and the professionalism they have for what they do. I’m thrilled for them, but not at all surprised to hear they were recognized with the accreditation,” Crandall added.

Since joining The Firefly Group three years ago, McCarthy has supported the efforts of the firm’s diverse client base in the areas of strategy planning, media relations, community outreach, comprehensive event management, marketing and collateral materials development. This is another area where Nancy shines,” Ranieri added.
McCarthy’s background includes seven years of public relations experience working for a large electric utility on Florida’s west coast where she focused on strategic planning, media relations, crisis communications, branding and project management. Complementing her practical on-the-job knowledge, McCarthy earned a bachelor’s degree in advertising from the University of Florida in 2000 and Accredited in Public Relations (APR) designation through the Universal Accreditation Board in 2005. The Four Ps Of Marketing Need A Facelift

by Lisa Nirell
In 1960, E.J. McCarthy, a marketing professor at Michigan State University, debuted the concept of the "Four Ps" and the way in which they guide the marketing mix. These Four Ps--Product (or Service), Place, Price, and Promotion--are the foundation of most Marketing 101 discussions. Many of you may be revving up your 2012 growth machine and re-visiting these fundamentals.
Yet if marketing were so simple, then why do so many marketing and sales initiatives fail? That was a question I often asked myself as I worked with B2B growth companies over the past few decades. They employ highly educated teams, savvy salespeople, and sharp executives. And yet, they wasted thousands, often millions, on projects.
For example, a recent client of mine, a division of a $4 billion software firm, continued to struggle with implementing new market messaging playbooks to their global sales teams. The VP of strategy could not figure out why people did not use these costly, detailed tools. That prompted me to design four different marketing blueprint criteria. My experience tells me these are more reflective of the new era of marketing and promotion. They include:
- Market – The internal and external factors that are causing your prospects and customers to change, as well as the ideal customer you are targeting.
- Message – How you communicate at every brand touch point: your positioning, sales messaging, presentations, etc.
- Method – The top marketing strategies to attract ideal customers. They include a host of traditional “push” marketing methods (e-newsletters) as well as “pull” methods (building marketing gravity through publishing, seminars, and social media communities).
- Mindset – A system for taming the limiting beliefs that stop your marketing from succeeding. The best laid plans fail when marketing leaders ignore the cultural beliefs and attitudes that get in the way.Herein lies the missing ingredient to marketing planning.
We recently worked with a $30 million engineering consulting firm to address all four of these areas. The results were impressive. In the past, they ignored the Mindset issue to their detriment. A lingering mindset stymied every new executive sponsored growth initiative. The mindset or belief was that "this new initiative shall pass."
Cynicism and procrastination prevailed. We provided a method for them to address the mindset during meetings. It created a whole new level of candor across their global teams. Within twelve months, they experienced a 25% top line revenue increase, improved profits, and were featured in Inc.
Marketing and selling the right products and services in the right place, at the right price, at the right time are still essential habits. Managing your beliefs around your marketing planning deserve the same attention. Now is the time to give your marketing blueprint a facelift.
New technology uses non-hazardous materials and produces zero emissions

STUART -- Someone call Erin Brockovich. B4C Technologies LLC, based in Palm City, Florida, has developed and refined a product that could completely eliminate the need for hexavalent chromium, a known carcinogen when inhaled, for increasing hardness, wear resistance, and extending the life of metal products. The compound produced by B4C is a propriety blend of boron, carbide, and other non-hazardous materials that is revolutionizing the metal coatings industry. The technology produces no emissions and the compound is safe for human exposure. Company Founder and Chief Technical Officer, Ed McComas, remarked, "All surface treatments, including paint, have some negative environmental impact. This product has zero negative effect on the environment."
B4C Technologies was founded in 2010 by Ed McComas and Thomas Dyer, Chairman and CEO, and is located in Sands Commerce Center. The company evolved out of a formula that sat in McComas' desk drawer for nearly 20 years. McComas worked to improve the formula over two years and then sought patents for his technology. He currently holds 9 US patents and several foreign patents in countries spanning the globe.
Hexavalent chromium is a $9 billion per year industry. The chemical is widely used in every aspect of the transportation industry including cars, trucks, airplanes, boats; in nearly every manufactured metal part. It is present in everything from household garbage disposals to HVAC compressors. "Hexavalent chromium is omnipresent, but invisible," said McComas.
The company first began exploring the applicability of replacing hexavalent chromium with its technology on gun barrels. Today, every United States military gun barrel is plated with hexavalent chromium. Government testing indicates that B4C's technology is an effective replacement for that plating. It is proven to double or triple the life span of the product it is applied to, and hardens surfaces to levels comparable to diamonds, making it a far superior choice to any alternative.
B4C's process is not a coating, but rather a diffusion process that becomes part of the surface of the metal. As metal in use heats and melts, the product treated with B4C's technology stays hard and lubricious, rather than sloughing off like a typical surface coating. The result is a product marketable among many sectors including, but not limited to, automotive; landscaping equipment; industrial cutting toolslike drill bits, saw blades, end mills; stamping and forging dies; and military vehicle, aircraft and marine armor plates. The company is working with both military and the private sector to roll out the technology.
"This technology represents a significant cost savings to any end user," said B4C CEO Thomas Dyer. "Longer life span means less down time and less money spent on replacement parts."
The company anticipates hiring 50 people over the next 36 months and investing $5 million in its operation. The mix of employees ranges from mechanical engineers to quality control to production managers and entry level production. The Business Development Board of Martin County (BDBMC) is actively working with the company, providing support, marketing assistance and, eventually, training resources. "The sky is the limit with B4C Technologies," remarked Tim Dougher, Co-Executive Director of the BDBMC. "They are demonstrative of the innovation and entrepreneurship that thrives in Martin County and we look forward to supporting their success."
"In a community that prides itself on green and environmental leadership, we should be especially proud that this type of technology is being developed here," said Crystal Stiles, Co-Executive Director, BDBMC. "B4C's technology could have positive global implications on our environment, leaving a greener legacy for future generations."
Top 10 Tech Acquisitions Of 2011
By: Rob Preseton *InformationWeek
While 2011 wasn't a year of historically huge tech merger and acquisition deals, activity was nonetheless vigorous. Google alone bought more than 20 companies, while the likes of HP, Oracle, SAP, Dell, and Microsoft rounded out their mature product portfolios with acquisitions. Among the strongest riptides in enterprise IT M&A: software as a service (SaaS), mobility, big data, and social networking.
What follows, in reverse order, is one editor's take on the 10 most important (though not necessarily the largest) enterprise IT acquisitions of the year. Not included on this list are the big OEM-oriented deals: Western Digital's $4.3 billion deal to buy Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, for instance, or Texas Instruments' $6.5 billion acquisition of National Semiconductor.
10. VMware and Socialcast: Virtualization market leader VMware isn't immune to social business fever, acquiring Socialcast, a maker of cloud-based communications and collaboration software that mimics "the interaction style of social networks, but with the security, management, and integration functions of an enterprise system," as my colleague David Carr reported in May. The Socialcast deal (terms weren't disclosed) followed two other cloud acquisitions by VMware: slideware maker SlideRocket in April and open source email software maker Zimbra in January 2010.
9. SAS Institute and Assetlink: This acquisition (no price tag was disclosed) isn't top 10 tech M&A material unto itself, but it's important in the context of the red hot trend it represents: the move by CMOs to apply analytics to their ad campaigns, promotions, social outreaches, and other marketing programs in order to prove and refine their effectiveness. Assetlink makes "marketing resource management" software, used to plan and budget ad spending, manage the content, create workflows, and manage leads. Its acquisition by SAS, announced in February, follows like-minded deals by IBM (it shelled out $480 million for Unica in October 2010) and Teradata ($525 million for Aprimo in December 2010).
8. Dell and Force10: Dell's acquisition of switching vendor Force10 Networks (financial terms weren't disclosed), following its $960 million deal in December 2010 to acquire storage virtualization vendor Compellent Technologies, enhances its credibility as a big league data center supplier, alongside Cisco, HP, and Brocade. Force10's market share is small--just 1%, according to Dell'Oro estimates around the time of the July 2011 deal--but its technology is considered first rate and Dell will bring it to many more customers.
7. Microsoft and Skype: Among the biggest tech deals of 2001, Microsoft's $8.5 billion acquisition of Skype is also emblematic of one of the biggest CIO trends: the consumerization of enterprise IT. The lines between business and consumer IT are blurring, and Microsoft is looking to capitalize on that trend by integrating the consumer-oriented Skype videochat software with its enterprise unified communications and messaging platforms. Speaking of consumerization, will 2012 be the year Microsoft finally lands Yahoo?
6. Oracle and RightNow: It's almost as if Larry Ellison plunked down $1.5 billion of Oracle's money to get back at a former protege, Marc Benioff, whose Salesforce.com and its cloud-based services have been stealing most of the thunder in enterprise software. Within weeks of his orchestrated rebuff of Benioff at the Oracle OpenWorld conferenceat San Francisco's Moscone Center, Ellison announced Oracle would be acquiring RightNow, a leading maker of SaaS-based customer service and management apps and a semi-competitor to Salesforce.
As my colleague Chris Murphy noted in a story on the RightNow deal, "Oracle, one of the tech industry's most acquisitive companies, isn't too concerned about overlapping products when it comes to buying into hot markets." Oracle had previously introduced its suite of enterprise software, Fusion, with a cloud-based option for CRM, as well as a hosted version of its PeopleSoft software licensed on a per-user, per-month basis.

Cut Your Taxes: 5 Year-End Tips
By Farnoosh Torabi
There’s a great deal of uncertainty around tax rates for 2011, and we may not hear about definite changes until later in December. Still, there are some moves you can make right now to potentially reduce your financial exposure to Uncle Sam come April 15.
1. Deduct Business Expenses
If you started your own business or began freelancing or working from home, gather up those business-related receipts. The cost of work-related travel, food, office supplies - maybe even gas - can be deducted from your taxable income. Check out the IRS’ list of qualifying deductions.
2. Review Medical Expenses
Know that you can deduct your out-of-pocket medical expenses as long as they add up to 7.5% or more of your adjusted gross income. (So if you earn $75,000, for instance, that’s $5,625.) If you’re thinking of getting any elective surgery - even LASIK - that expense, plus other out-of-pocket medical care you paid this year for, could help reduce your taxable income.
3. Donate
Charitable donations - from cash to cars – may be tax deductible up to 50% of your adjustable gross income. Appreciated property donations - like real estate, art, antiques - are deductible up to 30%. Time to start cleaning out the closet.
4. Offset Capital Gains
It’s been an up year for the market overall, so if you’ve cashed in on some gains, look for losing stocks in your portfolio. If you sell them before the end of the year to end up, the net loss can offset your short-term capital gains (which are taxed at 35%).
5. Boost Retirement Savings
If you’ve neglected to save this year, it’s not too late to get aggressive and further reduce your taxable income. The maximum contribution this year to a 401(k) is $16,500 (or $22,000 if you’re over 50). For IRAs, the max contribution is $5,000, or $6,000 if you’re above the age of 50. Expecting a year-end bonus? Not a bad way to pay yourself.

“Manufacturing products in an environmentally friendly, low impact way is our focus,” said CEO Eddie Kolos. “Martin County and the Business Development Board have offered priceless resources to our company as we take our business to the next level.” Kolos holds three patents consisting of sea salt and water for topical use on the skin.
The Business Development Board of Martin County is assisting the company with commercialization efforts and broadening its market share into even more main stream retail outlets. Through the efforts of the BDBMC’s Export Roundtable, company leadership actively participates in a community-wide export focus. By engaging partners at Enterprise Florida and the Office of the Governor, the BDB assisted H2Ocean in securing a renewed Certificate of Free Sale from Florida’s Department of Health, necessary for exporting goods internationally. The Business Development Board is still working with the company to secure training dollars for new and existing employees and expedited permitting through Martin County.
“Helping our local, Martin County companies navigate expansions is first priority at the BDB,” said Tim Dougher, Co-Executive Director, Business Development Board of Martin County. “H2Ocean is a world leader in their industry, innovative and entrepreneurial. We look forward to continuing to work with Eddie and his team as they find success in a global marketplace.”
H2Ocean was honored with BDBMC’s Green-to-Gold award this September, given to company who, through product or process, best exemplify green leadership in their industry. The company estimates, through recycling used boxes, paper and aluminum, it has saves the equivalent of 2,000 trees since 2008.

Biotech Boom To Remake Treasure Coast, Officials Say
by Eric Pfaler
Despite a sluggish economy and the slow process of bringing a biotech hub to the Treasure Coast, local officials believe the industry could transform the region in the next decade.
"Five years from now is going to be really exciting," Economic Development Council of St. Lucie President Larry Pelton said. "I think 10 years from now is going to be enormous. You won't recognize our county."
Thousands of jobs, improved wages and hundreds of acres of state-of-the-art biotech facilities are among the benefits officials tout when talking about the biotech sector. But stumbling blocks exist in the form of limited lenders, increased competition for federal grants and a slow economy.
Pelton said he still expects five new companies in the next five years and eventually 4,000 to 5,000 jobs just in the Tradition area.
Meanwhile, Mann Research Center President John DelRusso said he still predicts 500 developed acres for biotech near Tradition.
And all of that could mean jobs for local residents like Michael Cartwright.
Cartwright, 24, grew up in Port St. Lucie before attending Indian River State College for an associate degree. After taking his first biology course in the spring of 2006, Cartwright said he became enthralled with the subject.
Five years later, Cartwright came back to the Treasure Coast armed with an associate degree from IRSC and a four-year degree from the University of Central Florida to take a job with the Vaccine and Gene Therapy of Florida. VGTI is one of eight research institutes drawn to Florida after the state and local governments put more than $1.5 billion into the biotech industry.
"It was a large plus to get a job in the area doing biotech," Cartwright said. "The way it's developing is really fantastic."
Such job opportunities for hometown students didn't exist five years ago when Port St. Lucie and county officials attracted Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies to the Treasure Coast with a $90 million incentive package, half of which came from the state. That — coupled with Scripps Research Institute setting up in Jupiter — officially got the biotech ball rolling on the Treasure Coast.
Local investments to get Torrey Pines and VGTI to Port St. Lucie helped draw Mann Research Center as well as Martin Memorial Health Systems' new proposed clinical research hospital to a cluster known as the Tradition Center for Innovation.
Still, so far biotech represents a fraction of employment on the Treasure Coast.
As of December, only 362 employees in the Treasure Coast worked in the biotech sector, which comprised 0.2 percent of the local workforce according to the most recent data from the state's Agency for Workforce Innovation. The figure grew by 80 from December 2009.
But Pelton said it's difficult to look at employment statistics to determine the impact of biotech in the area.
Jobs from the proposed Martin Memorial's research hospital will be totaled in a different category than biotech according to the way the U.S. Department of Labor tracks jobs. Totals also will not include faculty additions to Indian River State College or Florida Atlantic University when those higher education institutions hire to keep up with the burgeoning local demand for science degrees.
But though the jobs won't count in statistics, they'll count in the overall employment for the county, Pelton said.
The biotech sector, however, is not immune to the economic problems that have slammed Florida's three staple industries — construction, tourism and agriculture.
For one, investors are slow to give out cash and attempts to profit from the types of products expected to come out of Torrey Pines and others require upfront money paid in the hopes of big profits down the road.
Scripps Research Institute, for example does the basic research and if the nonprofit makes a discovery that could become a profitable drug, a separate company could come in and make an agreement with Scripps to develop the drug.
Boston-based Third Rock Ventures created a new company called Adipothermics that will pay royalties to Scripps Research Institute and develop products based on Scripps' research. But according to an article in the Palm Beach Post, the company will be based in Boston.
Officials are working to make sure the spinoff companies stay in Florida. When the state gave more than $750 million, officials intended to attract the spinoffs as much as the institutes themselves.
Pelton said he expects some of the products invented on the Treasure Coast initially will be manufactured outside the area, but he hopes the Treasure Coast can keep the spinoffs created by Torrey Pines and others in the Tradition Center for Innovation, which is located off Gatlin Boulevard along Interstate 95.
The process, however, could take more than a decade after factoring in human trials and other FDA requirements.
"It's really astounding to me that the blockbuster drugs that we see coming out today are probably 15 years old," Pelton said. "The discovery was 15 years ago."
DelRusso said Mann Research Center is involved in discussions with three pharmaceutical companies about expansions in Port St. Lucie. DelRusso also said the company is in talks with the Alfred Mann Foundation, a nonprofit group that pumps money into research that can be commercialized, about locating in Port St. Lucie.
Federal funding, which supports the nonprofit research, also is becoming more difficult to obtain. More than 45,000 applications came to the National Institutes of Health in 2010. A little more than 20 percent of the applicants received awards, whereas 30 percent or more were successful from 1998-2003, according to the National Institutes of Health.
Major institutes such as Torrey Pines still have had success in obtaining multimillion-dollar grants, but it's uncertain whether the federal government will maintain its allotment for science as debt reduction discussions dominate Washington headlines.
"We live on funding on the NIH and from philanthropic organizations like the (Bill and Melinda) Gates Foundation," said Dr. Jay Nelson, the founder of VGTI. " ... It's been more and more difficult to get funding for the various programs. We've been pretty fortunate in our ability to get these funds, and hopefully, the way that we have structured the institute and the types of things that we're working on are the types of things that NIH is very interested in ... "
Despite the challenges, officials are optimistic.
"I think we'll see five to 10 years, I think we'll be a major biotech cluster," DelRusso said.
If DelRusso's vision becomes reality, the children of the community will have greater local college offerings than their parents. Those parents might cheerily welcome increased chances that their children will remain near home after college.
Cartwright does not have children, but he has seen the smiles his parents had upon learning he would return to the Treasure Coast."I'm not looking to start a family in the immediate future, but that's always something to consider," Cartwright said. "And the fact that the community's developing with a long-term plan like this is really a good investment back into the community."
